Apps for racing

Curious what apps, if any, people are using out on the race course? I've been plugging waypoints into my Navionics app and using the GPS for distance and rough time to the mark. I find it hard to take a lot of time to look thoroughly at my iPad, so I like the simple Navionics screen and layout for quick glances. Is anyone else using Navionics? Or any other useful apps? I also downloaded iRegatta but haven't used it enough to know for sure if it's worth keeping.

VMG to the wind with a waypoint set hundreds if not more miles away will give you VMG to the wind (at least when you start). We used VMG to the next mark for lay-lines, of course corrected for current (when applicable).

Regardless of the "tools" (or toys :)) one uses, and understanding of basic techniques is essential.

Good luck.

PS You'd probably get more hits on this if you had put it into the Ask All Sailors forum, since not everyone uses the Show posts from all forums, all sites link.

Interesting, Stu, had I seen this in Ask All Sailors, I would have moved it here. LOL I think this is the correct forum as the OP is really asking devote racers.

Other than basic navigation ( distance and bearing to a mark) we don't really use any apps for racing. Do it by visual and feel. Good wind and boat speed instruments are the most useful data, but that's not really an ipad app.

Thanks for the replies so far. I'm definitely up for giving iRegatta and RaceQs a closer look! Do you find with those apps that all that data on the screen to be too much for quick info?

I've been transitioning into J80s and 70s where we only have a compass on board. I find when I'm on the helm, it's all about focusing on the boat and taking input from my crew on wind, etc. But when I'm teaching clinics and am standing in the all too well known 'tacticians position' it's nice to have more info at my disposal that I can quickly glance at.
