I just tried applying Interlux 2000e barrier coat with the recommended roller. It left lots of nap or lint on/in the paint. This is the second time I have used a roller to apply barrier coat and bottom paint. It is a real hassle. I have to sand the lumps from the lint globs before applying the next coat. What type of roller or pad do other saylors use?? Would a foam roller work with barrier coat and bottom paint???? Using a brush is time consuming and a killer on the wrist and shoulder. HELP!!! Thanks, Boatlubber2

Small rollers

When I stripped and refinished my bottom a feew years ago, I used the small 1" x 6 1'2" rollers with 1/4" nap. They worked real well, and with the smaller rollers, you can get in the curved areas around the keel, skeg, rudder, etc better. I also use these rollers for applying the VC 17 in the spring.

I had the same problem. I tried foam rollers but they tended to smear rather than roll. You have to get a good quality, 3/16" nap, mohair roller cover. Tim R.

barrier coat

I am just beginning to get my boat in shape for the season, and have some questions concerning the bottom. What is a barrier coat , I also have some small blisters and would like to approach them in the best way possible ? Should I just sand them and repaint the whole bottom or first touch up these areas then paint the bottom.

I used the foam rollers to apply both the barrier coat and the VC17, I had no problems.

Barrier coat is a water intrusion barrier.

Jeff: A barrier coat is a few coats of epoxy that is used to prevent blisters. The problem that you would have on an older boat is the fact that you need to strip the bottom to the gelcoat. If you are not prepared to do this, I suggest that you just open the blisters, flush them with fresh water. Bondo makes a very good marine filler that works well for this process. Then you can use some barrier coat over these spots before you repaint the bottom. There are other fillers that can be used for this purpose if you do not want to use bondo. Check out West Systems for another option.

Barrier coat

In order to use epoxy as a barrier coat the gelcoat must also be removed the the laminate , advisable if you have blisters and dont use bondo underwater , If one cares to do a barrier coat as a preventative use innercoat over the gelcoat , after properly prepping , go to the West system web site and or call the West techs are very personable .

I've been there too many times before ....

My first application of barrier is by roller and is allowed to partly cure. Just after it 'gels' I knock off the tops of the pimples with a polyethylene trowel - the peaks are at the (current) recommended mil thickness of the barrier. Successive coats are applied with a foam roller quickly followed by wiping with a polyethylene trowel (the yellow WEST SYSTEM trowels) ... this quickly fills in the 'valleys', each successive coat is done before the succeeding one fully cures.... I keep working the trowel and roller until almost totally flat ... then allow to fully cure. Any remaining irregularities are filled in the same manner .... and this all produces a very fair and smooth hull and with no need to sand. .... if quick enough I apply the bottom paint before the very last barrier coat fully cures .... (called 'hot coating') and promotes great adhesion of the bottom paint .... no need to sand the barrier prior to application of the bottom paint. I cat-nap between coats as the above make for a very looooooong day. Anywho ... the above will produce a very flat and very fair hull and requires very little sanding ... I also apply bottom paint the same way .... as I dont want any of the zillions of little pimples that you get with a roller. Flat and fair paint = good light wind performance !!!! Hope this helps.

Mohair is the answer

I have put that barrier coat on three boats. You must roll it out, can't just roll it on like paint because it isn't paint. I have never had any problem whatsoever. Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies

Thanks to all the suggestions. I switched to foam rollers. The barrier coat went on nicely and the first coat of bottom paint flowed on easily. There is a little slipping when first rolling the loaded roller onto the hull; but as soon as the paint starts to roll out evenly it is fine. There is some dimpling but nothing like the hairy mess with dynex rollers. Thanks, Boatlubber2
