Am looking for a new place to trailer my H26, possibly with some friends next summer. Plan a week or two of cruising. Thought about the Apostle Islands, but can't find much info on the web. Anybody been there? Is there much to do besides swat skeeters (and how bad are they)? Are there hiking trails, places to dine, places to dock, etc.? Many thanks in advance.

Wonderful Apostles

Hi, Rich... I have sailed the Apostles frequently over the past 25 years and have always found something new every time I'm there. Great cruising. Excellent anchorages. Several Forest Service sites on islands -- great hiking and sight seeing. You can get to at least three lighthouses, and an old fishing village. A couple of the islands have docks, but they fill up pretty early in the afternoon during weekends. No restaurants on the islands (they are National Park Service preserves), but Bayfield has good dining. May I suggest that you grab a copy of "Superior Way" by Bonnie Dahl. (see link) It will provide you with all the detail you would ever want. By-the-way, the mosquitoes aren't too bad. It's the black flies that get you! On your way up to Lake Superior, stop by the Twin Cities... put your boat in at the Bayport Marina on the St. Croix. I'll buy dinner! Have fun! Bruce capnbruce@aol.com

Apostle response

Many thanks Bruce. May be coming up there next June - 3 boats all circa 25'. No need to buy dinner - but breaking bread together may be an option - while we pick your experienced brain for the best of everything (lighthouses, hikes, anchorages, etc.)

You'll love the Apostle Islands!

I agree with Capn Bruce. Get the Bonnie Dahl cruising guide, it is an excellent resource. We have been sailing in the Apostle's the last two years now and we love it. If you would like to see some pictures, check out my webshot albums. There are three different albums with pictures of the islands and anchorages we have visited. It is truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. You mention you are coming from Kentucky. If you are looking to provision in town, it is no problem. Bayfield has a small grocey store and a liquor store. There is a much larger grocery store in Washburn, a small town about 11 miles south of Bayfield. If you looking to launch and don't need crane service, you might consider launching from Washburn rather than Bayfield although there is a launch ramp in Bayfield but I think Washburn is slightly better. If you are looking for transient dockage while in the area, please consider Pike's Bay Marina. It is the marina my husband and I keep our Hunter 34, the Jolly Swagman. PBM is the nicest marina in the area with the best clubhouse and bathrooms. Gordon Ringberg is the marina manager and PBM always stands by on vhf16. I'll give you my email address and if you come up next summer, please let me know. My husband and I would love to meet you. Sandra.huonder@unisys.com
