I just picked up a used Apelco (see topic) and need an antenna. Apelco has 86'd this unit from service. Will the newer antennae work? I also need data cables, if anyone has a set, or could post a photo of the ends of the cables (male) I'd be appreciative. There is a chart chip in the unit, marked 12220. I can't find a chart that corresponds with that number. Anyone? Larry Wilson Richmond,Va.

Check the chart catalog

for chart numbers. Not sure why you bought a Loran The CG is going to phase the system out soon. Besides that I am not sure that the maintenance on the system is good. Last summer we got a fix that was 1000 yards east of our true position. Visibility was good so we knew that the fix was wrong. We don't trust our system any longer and now have a Garmin 72 GPS. Does far more than than the old Loran did.

Backup

Ross, Check your facts. Coast Guard is investing $millions to update the system. For a few dollars, I have a backup to my gps, which the military can downgrade, or shutdown whenever and for whatever reason they want to. The chart # doesn't show up on the chart list. That's why I asked.

Larry, I just read the

Coast Guard page on loran c and I stand corrected. They seem to be modernizing the system.
