They have left New Zealand headed to Rio. You can go to the link and download Virtual Spectator. This shows the race almost live - think it is currently updated every six hours, but still fun to watch. One of the pictures shows Abn Amro Two doing 17.96 kts in 16.2 kts of true wind. Yahoo!! VOR-y good presentation

Jim, This Virtual Spectator is one of the very best attempts on the net, to involve you in the actual race. On my modest 'puter it runs perfect, and the telemetry info in superb. This is what the internet can be, at its best. These folks should get a good pat on the back.

been following since the beginning - go the team.abnamro.com site for some great videos - get on the jan 18th video when team two set the world speed record - awesome video, as are many of the others on the list - enjoyable

I have been following it

I like the virtual spectator, but it some how seems "flat" without sound. Sound should be added even if it is "phony;" I think it would add an extra dimension to the VS. I like it regardless and it is now on my computer.

Extreme racing ...

The Volvo Ocean Regatta is great fun to watch. Changing it from an Around the World race into a series of ocean races and inshore races was a great idea. As exciting as the VO70's are am I the only one that feels cheated because they use their engines and cannot tack or gybe safely if the engine fails? The fact that they have to run their engines full time to sail is common knowledge right? Moving ballast and power assist from an engine don't break any rules of sailboat racing do they?

Engine

Actually they don't have an engine the moves the boat. The boats have a canting keel that can be moved side to side (40 degrees to the windward side). There were problems with the keel on the some of the boats (namely the Pirates boat)during one of the inshore races. The hydrolic ram would not move the keel quick enough when it gybed - which made the boat unstable and unable to compete. In fact the keels have been a problem area on several of the boats on off-shore legs. But no motor on the boat - the boats are just fast. SMR
