We are going to put bottom paint on our Mac for an anticipated trip first to the NE (late spring/early summer) and then to Florida for 2-3 months next fall. I was going to use Pettit's Ultima SR, but then someone mentioned using Pettit's Vivid on their Mac (inland waters) and liked it.

The boat is going to be trailered almost 6000 miles on the trip and I see that the Vivid is a hybrid somewhere between the ablative and hard paints and they say it doesn't wear off on the trailer bunks as bad as say the SR and other true ablatives. It is also a dual-biocide which appeals to me.

So I'm trying to find out if any of you are using it in Florida and how you like it for hard growth and slime?

Also have any of you trailered long distances with the Ultima SR and if so how did it hold up?

Any other suggestions for our situation?

Thanks,

Sum and Ruth

I'd point out that Vivid isn't recommended for high-fouling areas like Florida... where Ultima SR-40 (Ultima SR was renamed) is. A friend uses Ultima SR on his boat and it spends about half the year in Florida and half the year in Buzzards Bay...and it seems to do quite well.

SR in Florida

I put SR on my boat last Jan and leave my boat in the water all year even all hot warm summer months and I am so impressed with it that I still can't believe how well it is doing keeping the bottom clean.
I don't have a diver clean the bottom every month like some do I dive to clean the prop and just sail a lot to clean the hull, when I do clean the prop I do come up with blue on my head so it seems to come off easy if you brush it too much which I don't and think that's why it is lasting so well.

Thanks guys, I think I'll go back to using the SR. We hope to be out a lot this coming year, but will probably only launch on and off the trailer as little as 3 times. Also...........

.............. the boat launches very easy with little rubbing on the bunks. My main concern is the paint wearing off rubbing on the bunks on the long trips to the water from here in SE Utah to New York and then from there down to Florida. I think I could take some paint and the......

............. rear boat stand and touch up the paint if needed before we launch.

I've done more reading on the Vivid and it seems people either love it or hate it, whereas the SR seems to get constant good reviews except for coming off easy on the trailer bunks.

Thanks for the input guys and if anyone else has anything to add please do,

I am down in Florida and have had tremendous results with Sea Hawk. I use their cukote biocide. According to the manufacturer, this paint can go in and out of the water with losing antifouling performace. I would stay away from the Vivid if you are coming to Florida. It seems to last less than a year down here. This is a good link for Sea Hawk Bottom Paint to learn more.

Thanks, I was on that site over the past couple days, mainly looking at the Tuff Stuff for a barrier coat. It looks like the Cukote Biocide Plus is harder than the Ultima SR, so that would probably make it better on the trailer.

The main thing is actually hearing that it would work where we are going from someone like you. That means a lot. I'll call them tomorrow and probably order as they have free shipping until Thursday and that would save us a lot considering were we live. They also have that in a dark blue and that would look good with our bimini and other covers.

c ya,
