Anyone used a Mr. Heater (Portable Propane Heater) in there?

I just purchased a 9,000 BTU Mr Heater to use in my boat 43' Hunter. It is designed to be used in small spaces and has a "low oxygen safety shut off system" built into it. I also have a co2 sensor in the boat. I would only use it when I'm awake. Anyone had any luck with these?

Any open combustion within a closed space will eventually lead to problems. I see that you have a CO2 sensor. Might that be a carbon monoxide sensor instead?
Carbon monoxide is the off gas of combustion and it is cumulative meaning it builds up over time and doesn't leave the body very fast. So, a dose today, more tonight and more tomorrow. The senser doesn't see that combined total but your headache certainly does and eventually you get real sick.
That's a worse case event so be warned. Vent the area totally before going to sleep in that toasty warn bunk.

We now have 2 Mr Heaters on our Hunter 306. One Mr Heater was given to us when we got married 10 years ago and have use it continuously. We make sure to leave the hatch open and we don't leave it on when we are away from the boat or sleeping.

Re: Mr Heater

Aside from the fire hazard from an unattended heater I have no problem with them. They are designed to be used in tents.

Considered one for the cockpit last fall but hard winter came too soon! Now its warming up quick so I'll wait. I wonder if it would warm up the cockpit for outdoor living space.

I've been using mine for a few years now in the spring, fall and the winter when working on the boat and love it.....I find if you leave it on low the propane lasts much longer and it does a good job of getting the cabin up to a comfortable temperature and although it has a built in CO sensor open a hatch and ventilate just in case

They work great. We have one about our HV'36. Use it to accelerate the warm up process and then we also have an electric heater to maintain the temp.

We have not had any issue with the heater but we are also careful.

We used a boom tent on our 1963 Chris Craft Sailyacht (deep center cockpit) and a trawler lamp hanging from the boom provided a little warmth in the cockpit on those chilly Central Florida winter evenings.
I'd think one of these heaters would work great with a boom tent.

Re: Anyone used a Mr. Heater (Portable Propane Heater) in th

I have one that I use when away from shore power on cool days. Works very well. i have a CO detector and a propane detector .. It is a well made unit that has good safety features .. like a tip-over kill switch and low oxygen shut-down. Last time I used it, the temperature was 32F outside.. the cabin was cozy warm. If you use it in a cockpit, it would be better to have the space at least partially enclosed, as merlinuxo did. I have used it successfully to warm feet and legs while dining at the cockpit table. The flame can be blown out if it is used where big puffs of wind can hit it.

I have a similar propane catalytic heater, which does a nice job of keeping the cockpit toasty on late spring/ early fall nights.

Re: Anyone used a Mr. Heater (Portable Propane Heater) in th

I've had one for several years and it works great aboard my Hunter 34. I purchased a 12' hose attachment online and run it through a port to a 20lb tank which I keep on the deck. The tank lasts about 60 hours. I have a propane detector, always leave the hatch slightly open to vent, and never sleep with it on. When I'm away from the dock I use the 1lb canisters and leave the 20 pounder behind.
