Lost my slip at the local marina (they won't let me transfer the lease from the boats previous owner and there's a three to four year waiting list!) so I'll be doing a lot of trailering this year. Lake Oroville looks like a good place to go and it's only about a 2 hour drive from my house, but I'm wondering about the sailing conditions there. Has anybody sailed there, and could you tell me how it was? Any other suggestions for good lake sailing in central and northern California? Thanks for your input, Jeff

Did you ever consider the Delta?

Jeff: Have you ever considered the Delta. Close to your home and plenty of places to cruise to or overnite on a hook. We are docked in Hidden Harbor Marina near Rio Vista. www.hiddenharbormarina.com They charge $5.75/ft/mo including all utilities.

Lake Spaulding

Other good recommendations: Off I-80 below Yuba Pass is Lake Spaulsing, a high altitude PG&E reservoir. The reservoir is about 6 or 7 miles long and is surrounded by granite formations and evergreens. Because of the rock, no red clay, high altitude, and snow-fed streams, the water is generally reasonably clear which makes for scenic sailing. It's a very short distance from the freeway to the launch ramp but from Polloc Pines it would be bit of a drive. Try it once, maybe on a three day weekend? And early in the summer before the water level starts to drop. There is no development, except for the dam, so this makes it very nice for camping overnight. When we were there we had the entire lake to ourselves. This brings back memories. One of which, back in the heyday of hippies ('68), we sailed around a point only to have our wind stolen and we drifted. Low and behold laying on a rock was a couple sun bathing. Ooops - we just waved at each other and slowly drifted by.

Two new places to see

Thanks for the suggestions you guys, I've never even heard of Spaulding, I'll have to check it out. Steve, I went to the website for your marina and it looks like a great place. One thing I really liked was their pricing, it's only $50 more a month than what I'm paying for dry storage! However, I'm still a beginner to sailing and am wondering if I might be getting in over my head trying to sail on the Delta. What do you think? I've been on the Delta before when I was a kid (ski boat), but have never sailed there. Maybe when the weather warms-up a bit I'll go down there for a weekend and check it out. Does your marina have guest slips available for such a thing? Do you know what they charge on a daily basis? Anyhow, thanks for the advice and I'm still hoping someone who's sailed Oroville will post. Jeff

Lake Sailing in Northern California

There are lots of great lakes to sail on in Nor Cal. Lake Oroville is ok for sailing in the spring, but later on it gets to hot and there is no wind. A better place would be Don Pedro Lake. This lake is huge and usually gets wind in the afternoon. There are many arms to explore and lots of good secluded anchorages. Another great place to take your trailerable boat is Clear lake. Go in the spring up to June. There will be reliable wind and there are several good anchorages. Good launching can found at Konocti bay sailing club and at Braito's marina. Good luck and have fun out there. Ryan
