Anyone mod the port side hanging locker?

I need more space for clothes.
The original hanging locker on the port side seems fairly unuseable
to store tee shirts, shorts, underwear, etc.
I am thinking of doing a series of shelves in there.

Currently just standing there looking at it trying to get some brilliant idea.

Has anyone else redone this space?
If so, can you share your experience?

Thanks!

A former owner of Beowulf, I think, must have made a modification. We have
a fixed shelf above two wire basket on runners. Between these and the door
there is room for some hanging clothes. Below the whole caboodle there is a
drawer where we put life jackets, harnesses and wet weather gear.

The one thing that surprises me about our Vega is that there is no wet
locker. We let things drip in the cabin during the passage down the English
Channel last year. The Mediterrranean seems mercilfully drier. Maybe that
was so in Florida and the Caribbean, and maybe that was when Beowulf was
modified.

Groundhog,
I'm redoing that area as we speak. I'm putting four 3" high drawers at the bottom. The lowest one is 10" deep. The second one up is 15" deep and the top two are 20" deep. There is room to take the top two deeper, however, then there wouldn't be enough room to open the drawers all the way because of the head compartment. It does create a little storage nook behind them.

Instead of having a hanging area, I saw where another boat put in shelves using mesh material with shock cord sewed down each side, with a loop on each end, that can be captured on a hook. This would allow airflow around any clothes that are stored on the shelves. I'm putting in two of the mesh shelves between the top of the drawers and the shelf just beneath the port light.

I have the drawing that I used to plan it out and should have pictures up in the next week or two.

Groundhog,
LOL about where to start. For me it was easy because I replaced all the bulkheads. It will be a bit of a challenge if you want to keep your bulkheads intact. The problem is the molding on the ends of the bulkheads. On mine, they were both glued and stapled. If you want to keep them intact, the easiest way is also the scariest. Once you start, you can't go back. The trick is to get the front panel out through a smaller opening than the size of the panel. I would take a jigsaw cut the panel in half, and then pry it out.

Because you're only changing that storage area, you also have to figure out how you are going to match the finish. I don't know if you can still get plywood with the same wood type on the surface. Because it is a small area, you might be able to get by with a brown paint that is close to one of the colors in your varnished panels.

I got my face panel with the drawer openings cut and sanded today and now get to start building out the supports for the drawers. I should have the pictures posted in the next day or so. I'll put them under a separate category just for the closet.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
