I am going to repack the stuffing box this year and have heard about GFO Packing from Gore-Tex. Supposed to be virtually dripless and lasts for years. Also, what about the teflon stuff? Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Les Murray s/v Ceilidh 86 C-36 #560

Using Drip-Less.

Which I guess is the Teflon that you mentioned. It's like a putty that goes between two regular rings of packing. Sells for $56. Have no info regarding GFO. Here's what the WM catalog has to say about their product: "Drip-Less is a unique, clay-like material that molds to the inside of the stuffing box, creating a permanently-lubricated seal. It is internally lubricated with low-friction compounds, so it requires no water for lubrication. Properly installed, it completely seals off the shaft log to outside water. This means no water in the stuffing box or in your bilge. Unlike average flax packing which breaks down due to heat and contact with water, Drip-Less Packing wears slowly and lasts several seasons, thus eliminating frequent packing changes and expensive annual haulouts."

P.T.F.E Flax Packing

Les I don't know anything about GFO but you also asked about teflon. I repacked my shaft 3 years ago with P.T.F.E Flax packing from West Marine. My shaft doesn't drip a drop. I know it is supose to and I have tried several times to adjust it so it will drip. If I loosen the stuffig nut any more it runs a stream. As soon as I tighten it just enough to stop the stream it doesn't dirp at all. So I guess I've got drip-less packing for $4.00 instead of $50.00. Paul

SOS flax used here- no drip

I've used flax tightened just enough so that it doesn't drip. No real wear on the shaft either. 14 years now only 2 replacks. Jim McCue
