My sail was damaged in a freakish high wind and hail storm we got yesterday. I had it on the boat and the wind beat it up. I was speaking with a friend at the yacht club and he said that people usually hold on to their original sails when the decide to get a new. Anyone looking to sell a 25 mainsail.

My dimensions are luff 24.4 leech 25.8 foot 8.86

Dave,
Check this guy out. http://www.porpoisesailing.com/ There was a guy last year whom we met sailing on the river in an OD 22 that he had fixed up, who bought two new sails off this guy and he was very happy with the sails and the price that he paid for them.

I have gone to both of those sites. I just keep missing on the foot size being a little too big. I have been to every site on this list of used sails.

http://www.sailingtexas.com/csails.html

Do you think this would work? The luff is just 4 inches longer but I think the mast would hold it?

The Luff measures 24 feet 8-1/2 inches. The Leech measures 25 feet 8-1/2 inches. The Foot measures 8 feet.

Dave,
How bad is your sail damaged? I was faced with this same problem last year when my Mainsail got a large square rip as it rubbed up against one of my spreaders. I brought it to two different sail makers. One of them wanted to sell me a new mainsail and the other guy just checked out a good portion of my sail by trying to rip it with his fingers and it wouldn't rip. He patched my sail replacing a panel, and reinforced that batten pocket. It wound up costing me $200.00, but at least it was better than shelling out the $1170 that the other guy who wanted to make me a new sail. The lady grabbed the damaged part of my sail and ripped it a little more and said, " This sail is sun damaged." "I can repair it but I can't guarantee the repair." Of course, if you grab a torn sail and rip it at the tear, it's going to rip easier than if you try to rip it with your fingers in a different part of the sail. All I can say is; my sails are old but I've always taken good care of them. I've probably mentioned this before but; whenever I'm out sailing and I stop and anchor for any amount of time, I always put my sail cover on. I even bought a new cover off Rudy last year. My sails aren't blown out and the fabric is still stiff. I've been using this Mainsail pretty regular this year and it's just as good as ever. In fact, I screwed up that day that it got torn by not reefing the sail and letting it go against the spreaders in a hard blow that day. Only you can make the call on your Main, but if you think that it's worth saving, take it to a couple of different sail makers. I started with Thurston/Quantum, the people who originally made my sails, and ended up taking my Main to North Sails in Portsmouth RI., who fixed it. I originally paid about $1200 to have Thurston make both of my sails. There's no way I'm going to pay almost that much to have them to make one Mainsail. Sometimes it's better to get two opinions because some sail makers are only interested in selling you a new sail.

And another option...

Joe, Dave lives in south Georgia. I doubt he has reasonable or local access to a sail loft or repair. Here is an alternative:

Put damaged sail in box and ship to Sail Care. They will give you a written estimate before they do anything. They are good at sail repair. You ought to see my patched and repaired main sail.

And it was also cleaned and starched (or whatever the stiffening treatment is).;)

They will fix most anything, but I know one sail that they claimed not worth fixing. They gave estimate anyway. Guy had it fixed and it is serviceable.:ass:

Re: And another option...

Hey there you go, Dave! I've heard a lot of good reports about Sail Care. It may be worth it to call them first and talk to someone about shipping it to them to have it check out. He may be able to partially evaluate that sail by asking questions over the phone, like the pinch/tear test that the guy did on my sail. It's worth a shot. I had my sail back in a week after I dropped it off. Just for the heck of it, grab the sail in another area that has no damage, and with your thumb and index finger of each hand close together, try to rip it. If it doesn't rip, it's probably worth saving. Then on the other hand, (four thumbs and a finger) if your Main is the original Neil Pride Sail that came with your boat and it's all blown out, you'll know for sure.

I keep going back and forth in my mind that I am either paying $150 - $200 for a sail to be repaired and have a 30 year old repaired sail or spend that same money on a much younger sail. I found a sail maker that makes sails to the specs of the O'Day 25 mainsail with Dacron panels for $500 brand new. Just a little above the budget right now.

Try Minney's Yacht Salvage, he has one advertised that should work for you. Cheap too.
I check out his inventory regularly, waiting for a Mac 25 main sail.

Dave Recess of Quitman, now question?

Dave said, "I found a sail maker that makes sails to the specs of the O'Day 25 mainsail with Dacron panels for $500 brand new." Clue us all in on this source. Just for reference and comparison.:)

Also, the sails on my 26 are Schurr so they would also have your measurements on file. You might just want to get a bid. And they are out of Pensacola, you could drive down.:D

The sailwarehouse sells new and used.

There main page is http://thesailwarehouse.com/cgi-bin/web_store.cgi?page=storeframe.html&cart_id=

From there on the right side of the page you can either put in your boat type or measurements.

I chose O'Day 25 from the pull down and there were several new main sails including this one

Dave,
I would definitely go for the new sail. $500 is a great price for a new Mainsail for an OD 25. That's less than what I paid for my new Mainsail at Thurston's years ago. I didn't realize that your sails were 30 years old. This new Mainsail may have a loose foot. I think that this is becoming the style for Mainsails. One of the guys in my club had a Mainsail built for his OD 26 by Sperry Sails, and it is loose footed. He likes it. Joe

Dave- for a used sail at a fair price, try Richard or Brian at AtlanticSail Traders.com. Their sails are listed on their website with sizes. These guys give excellent and fair priced service.

I checked Atlantic. You know what I see a lot? Hobie 16 mainsails are darn close to the O'Day 25 Mainsails. There are quit a bit of them available too. They sure do have a lot of color going though. Plus that huge H logo.

They are talking aboit the slugs that attach the sail to the mast. You would probably want to replace tjem with new anyway. Give them a call they are pretty nice people. They are always willing to haggle.
