I found a website for a company in Clearwater, FL called Outdoor fabric central (Outdoorfabriccentral.com). They list a really great price for marine grade Sunbrella fabric at $15.50 per yard (46" wide). Also says 9.25 oz fabric.

Does anyone have any experience with this company in ordering canvas? I am looking to put the Admiral to work in sewing new covers for the bimini, main sail cover, jib cover strip, and other canvas on the Quest family boat (1975 ODay 27). It appears to me to be the same product as other companies, just at a great price.

Thanks for comments and feedback if any.

Hey JonnyQ
Looks like the price is right and sumbrella is sumbrella. The real question is do they have the thread, and fasteners at a good price?
Also, I've done all projects you listed with a regular sewing machine except the jib cover strip. The strip is over the well reinforced portion of the sail so you are going to have to balance the Admiral's frustration with hand palming (hand palming is not "ladies" work BTW) and the cost of having a shop do it. I'd let her see what is involved before I committed to that one project.

Sailrite has the 46 inch for $15.25 and 60 inch wide for $18.25....

If you get the "Plus" then it jumps up to $24.50 for 60 inch.

Make sure you aren't pricing Plus on one site vs. marine grade on another and I would recommend getting the 60 inch wide over the 46 inch.

I saw some plus on a boat where we are now and couldn't decide if I would want it or not. He had a new professionally made Bimini/Dodge and they were really nice. We want to take ours up and down so I think we will stay with the marine grade less expensive lighter material. I think if one had their canvas up all the time and were in a wet climate the Plus might be the way to go. It would also be harder to work with which could be of concern.

So seeing that Sailrite is actually a little less and has everything else you are going to need I'd go with them. These are big projects you have planned. We have done something similar for both boats....

... and have months into them, mostly Ruth. Of course we are retired and didn't put in full 8 hour days, but still tons of time. Pretty enjoyable time though.

Good luck,

Sum

I've used them too. It was several years ago, and my expectations were met, so I have no strong opinions one way or the other. Here is one of the projects I made from the light weight fabric I ordered:

My last project, boom tent, I found the #6 duck at the local Jo Ann's Fabric. My wife had a 50% off coupon, so the price was right.

Any thoughts about using the prepared sailrite sail pack package or ordering my own materials? I assume their kit involves cutting their supplied bolts down to size based on my specific measurements of my boom and flaked sail? I ask because the color I want only comes in 48 inch width and the sail rite kits are 60" bolts. They are offering an extra bolt at 12" to add on to make a 60" bolt. This kit modification was not based on any specific measurements other than a 10.5 foot boom length.

Ideas, suggestions? Might I not need the extra 12" bolt after all? Probably best to avoid an extra seam if not neccessary, right?

JonnyQuest,

You might want to first order the DVD. I had planned to make a stack pack, and the DVD was quite good. I hadn't realized that I needed some and wanted other modifications. However, I finally decided to not make (or buy) a stack pack.

Hi Tejas and Sumner,
I will go ahead and order the DVD, considering modification that will be needed. I also don't currently ave lazy jacks and will still need to design them before hand, as I expect they take some fiddling to figure out. Sumner, your journaling of the build process is really helpful, thanks for putting the time into it for me and the rest.
Switching to slower gears now on this project--sounds like it will take some thinking.
