If you have had transmission problems with your sailboat transmission on a yanmar engine, please contact me. I have replaced 2 in a two month period. both were housing failures.

Have had Yanmars in last two boats - total time 28 years no problems at all. Please provide details of engine, boat and problems before raising a scare. Seems unlikely to be the engine or transmission. Regards,

More info please

Bob, are you replacing the transmissions, or, is a mechanic? Are you doing engine realignments each time? Was the engine aligned with the prop shaft prior to the first failure? Please provide additional information for your circumstances. I am sure there are a lot of us Yanmar engine/transmisstion owners that can help you and you can help us.

I would certainly like to hear more details about your problem. I have a 1985 Yanmar that seems to work great. Yanmar uses trans from another manufacturer - I don't think Yanmar actually makes them. I can't remember the name of th ecompany right now.

I purchased a 1984 Pearson with a 2 GMF. Original engine and transmission... runs fine. The only problem I have had is with the shift lever (I think). After motoring around for a bit it trys and slips down towards neutral. I have velcrowed the lever to the binnicle guard when ahead. I hope that's all it is. It shook pretty bad. I will take a look at it this fall.

Kanzaki transmissions

I just replaced mine last winter, but it was original. Mine went out because of bad motor mounts. They cost alot, but they need to be replaced if they are spongy. They get soft over time. While you have everything apart, check the shaft for straightness, install a dripless seal, cutless bearing and anything else that is needed to make the drivetrain right. mine was $4500 for everything I mentioned, but I didn't do any of the work myself.

If you have had to replace two in that short a time, maybe is something other than the transmissions that are at fault, such as alignment, mounts, etc.
