Honda Eu2000i generator? Or know if it is possible to use an inverter with it to get over the start up spike for occasional use on the hook? Shore power handles it at the dock but would like to run the heat pump under way or on the hook sometimes. Thanks for any info.

Definately Not!

I have the same exact set-up. To my great disapointment, my IU2000 will NOT run my 16Kbtu A/C unit. :( good luck, jack Beneteau 411

"Soft Start"

The eu2000 will not put out enough amps to start your heat pump. You may install a Soft Start capacitor to your heat pump and that may allow you to use it. RV'rs use them all the time to kick-start their A/C units. There is a kit available for appliances which can be used. Installation required.

I have a SupCo capacitor on my home system.

It helps, especially when the generator is needed because of a power outage. But if I were you, I would look into paralleling an inverter.

Allowing that there is some gain from the

atmospheric heat, we are still saddled with the fact that 3000 btu's equals 1 kilowatt of electrical energy. So if the heat pump is not able to deliver 8000 btu's per kilowatt you won't be able to make it work.

Honda eu series are in fact inverters

that take the produced DC current and change it to AC. Honda does make a paralleling kit to allow you to hook up two generators. I don't see a problem in hooking up one generator and a separate inverter with one of these kits. Such a setup may be adequate to start the unit at startup and as it cycles. Having said that I would not consider it a practical option to power an AC unit on a boat as the inverter will share the load and will be continiously drawing juice from the batteries that power it. You could parallel two Honda generators for a 4,000 watts output but now we are talking an additional 50# and $1,000. Depending on the usage you intend to give the unit on the hook there may very well be a much simpler solution; Purchase a 5,100 btu window unit from Sam's Club for around $80 with a mechanical switch and it will surely be powered by the eu2000. If for a few nights a year you can put up with the inconvenience of setting the a/c up in the companionway you can surely sleep in comfort. The reason I recommend the one from sam's is that it is the smallest unit I have seen.
