A family gave me a partially built tender. their dad built it in the sixty's and didn't quite get finished. it sat on the basement ceiling until i found it. its about 8' with a flat plywood bottom and square back. it looks like what he did 'hull only' was done marine grade, and correctly. it has a small glass window in the bottom, about 12x14" meant for underwater observation. i couldn't find the plans anywhere. i did find 4 1x4 fir planks which i believe were to make the seats and rub rails there is enough plywood left from the transom to make the v for the front and the 2 knees for the aft corners. i think i can strech the fir enough to make stringers for the seats. it came with a matching trolling motor so i need to make a provision for the battery. does anyone know about west system? should i use fiberglass and if so what thickness and type? should i coat it inside and out? i want the boat white and the fir stained to look like expensive wood, also a blue stripe to match my hunter. also without the battery it will probably get turned over a lot so should i put some foam under the seats. should i coat the wood under the trim? has anyone ever seen this plan before?

I built a plywood dinghy last year and used system three fiberglass components. They have a kit which includes all you need with clear instructions. Send for their Epoxy book.

Good Advice from Russell

The Wooden Boat Forum, is the main nerve for the type of help you seek. Here's a link to a thread that is an index of helpful posts from the recent past, a real goldmine of information from some very skilled people. http://media5.hypernet.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=008298 For some reason this link didn't copy properly to this forum, so copy and paste it into your browser's address field to make it work.

building a dingyt

I made my own dingy out of plywood and I epoxied both sides of the plywood before assembling. after assembly I glassed the outside and faired out any depressions after which I painted it off white. It is for rowing only. good luck...Proctor

Robby I am looking into building one at this time so I contacted a friend, Ken Abrahams at the Yacht Club I bleong to, who gives classes on building these. The message below and related link is from him. Hi Jim, See attached plan for the one I build. I have made it 8 to 16 feet. The 12' seems best. I have an 8' and a 12' at ship to shore to look at. I use stitch and glue instead of a chine member. I also suggest www.unclejohns.com for kits. His pirogue kits are stocked at Stines. I (we) have built several of the 10 ft. skiffs. They turn out very nice. I would recommend them above the pirogue for a tender. Higher sides, etc. I have a 10' skiff on my camper trailer that I take along with us. Sail or row. I also have one of these at ship to shore to look at. Good hunting, Ken

I have built 2

I found a book called "BUILD THE NEW INSTANT BOATS" by Harold Payson. I built two different row boats following Paysons book. I ordered the drawlings from him also, but in your case you won't need them. The book is still available new. Try a library first. He takes you from the begining to a finished boat. Try Amazon.com if you can't find it. Also John Hamilton Book Sellers on the web.good luck

Built one but....

I built one as well as a 15' skip jack. A lot of work but fun with basic wood tools. I use a dingy to get to and from the mooring and used the wood dingy for a while, switched to a "fantastic plastic" 8 footer. (Can't tember the brand but West Marine has them). Light, indestructable and easy to row. Even got a 21.5 HP air cooled motor for mine (Kind of like a grass trimmer with a prop). Much easier to care for that the wood one. HN
