Thanks for your help - actually I am out at a mooring in Echo Bay and looking for someone a little closer. Right now my P-30 just needs a little troubleshooting - I have a brand new, fresh water cooled Moyer Marine engine and last week it stopped running for apparently no reason. I am working with Don Moyer to try to troubleshoot the issue (it may just be something as simple as bad gas). In the meantime, if you have any friends looking for a bargain, I have come to the decision to sell my Pearson 30 and buy a smaller boat which will be less time consuming to maintain. Here are the specifics: 1976 Pearson 30 Edson Wheel New Freshwater cooled Engine Ball-type seacocks Dripless shaft Raritan PHII head UK full batten mainsail Profurl jib furling Price: $9000 Thanks! Chris

THE ATOMIC 4 IS NOT TOO HARD TO FIGURE, IT IS ALMOST 1 OF 3 ISSUES A. FUEL PUMP, THE CAM WEARS AND IT STOPS PUMPING, FIX IS AN ELECTRIC PUMP, PART ABOUT 250.00 INSTALL A PAIN (MAINLY REMOVING OLD ONE, ALSO CHECK THE ANTI SIPHON VALVE ON THE TANK IF YOU HAVE ONE, THEY STICK OPEN B. OVERHEATING, A. WATER PUMP, EITHER CAM OR IMPELLER, BEST FIX REPLACE IMPELLER ANNUALLY, IF CAM ITS A PROBLEM. IF IT HAS BEEN OVERHEATING, HEADS WARP, EASY FIX IS 2 OR 3 HEAD GASKETS AND TIGHT IF NOTHING IS CRACKED, ONLY OTHER PROB LIKE THAT IS HEAD GASKET CAUSE HEADS ARE WARPED, SAME FIX C. GAS TANK, THEY GET CRUD IN BOTTOM EVNETUALLY CHOKE FILTER AND KILL ENGINE, TWO FIXES 1 EASY AND MAY WORK 1 TOUGH AND WILL WORK EASY, RUN TANK DOWN VERY LOW, USE HAND PUMP REMOVE GAS AND CRUD FROM BOTTOM, PUT GALLON IN REMOVE AGAIN ETC UNTIL CRUD LESSENED WILL WORK IF TANK NOT TO0 D CORODED OR TOO DIRTY TOUGH REPLACE TANK, MAY COME OUT THRU COCKPIT LOCKER BUT MAY NOT, HAVE TO PULL WHEEL STEERING APART TO GET OUT, IF NOT LOCKER CUT COCKPIT FLOOR. Engine stalling problem resolved

If anyone is interested - I found the root cause of my engine stalling problem. Ten years ago a marina pulled out the fuel tank for cleaning. When they put it back they bent the copper attachment tubing where the fuel tank pickup tube connects to the fuel line. As a result whenever the engine was running gasoline was spilling onto the top of the fuel tank and air getting into the system. This did not result in any running issues for a number of years until I replaced the old A4 with a rebuilt motor with an electric fuel pump (and less suction). A4s are great smooth running engines but the thought of having that gasoline spilling around is food for thought. I would recommend to be careful and perhaps have everyone on deck when starting up the engine. Just a thought... Thanks! Chris

A4 stalling

Too bad my mechanic here in California is so far away from you. He installed my A4 that he rebuilt, when it started to stall a few weeks later he knew exactly what it was. There's a tiny idle jet in the carburator. The absolute smallest piece of dirt or anything in the fuel will plug it. He pulled the brand new carb apart and cleaned it, then installed a Sierra filter in front of it. Free, I might add, except for the cost of the Sierra Filter. It runs perfectly now. When restoring my boat the one thing I didn't do was drain the gas tank and clean it. After 40 yrs I'm sure there's some unspeakable things in there. This is my next project before leaving for Mexico. Pump it out and put in all new clean fuel. That's unfortunatly the problem with old carburator technoledgy on the A4s. Having a carburator with a float in the ocean, is not a good idea, but the only ideas they had back then. After this summer, he's pulling the A4 and replacing it with a kaboto 3 cylinder diesel with fuel injection. The Kabotos are lighter smaller and put out about the same horse power. Most important they, like all newer engines, are fuel injected. Aside from being dirty, all fuel gets old and bad if it sits for a while. You should constantly add fuel additives like STP to your tank along with a gum out additive occasionaly.

Thanks for the info

We only use the engine to go in and out of the harbor so it does not matter for us but I see your concern with the floating bowl carburetor. I know that on my 2hp outboard when we have carburetor issues fuel can flow out when the engine is in the up position for storage... Have you ever asked any of the Atomic 4 fans about this?
