I'm thinking about leaving my boat at these two places as I hop down the east coast this summer. I need to know some safe places to leave the boat for a week or so that won't cost me two arms and a leg. Any suggestions? Names of marinas etc.

Buzzards Bay marinas

You might try Brownell Boatyard in Mattapoisett,Ma which is near New Bedford. It's a well protected harbor and this boatyard maintains a small number of moorings. Telephone is 508 758-3671.If not check Fairhaven, MA and New Bedford, MA. Prices will be better than the Cape Cod side of the Bay.

Lots of Marinas

Richard, There are lots of marinas around Rumson, but not all of them are sailboat friendly (the market around there really focuses on power boats). The towns right around there include Sea Bright (1 or 2 bridges depending on where in Sea Bright), Monmouth Beach (need to go under 2 bridges), Rumson (again, 1 or 2 bridges), Highlands (0 or 1 bridge). I attached a link that lists some of the local marinas. Barnacle Bill's in Rumson is OK (good food and drink at the restaurant), but if I remember right it is somewhat shallow (too shallow for our '79 H33). The Channel Club is nice (where we are now), but the 2 bridges are a pain and it is somewhat expensive. Monmouth Sailing Center may be an option. Bahr's avoids all bridges, but I don't know about cost. If you are a yacht club member, see if you have reciprocal privileges at Atlantis Yacht Club in Monmouth Beach. If Rumson is not mandatory, there are lots of marinas and yacht clubs surrounding Sandy Hook and Raritan Bays, including municipal marinas in Atlantic Highlands, Perth Amboy and, I think, Keyport. Try Morgan Marina in Morgan or Lockwoods in South Amboy or Sayerville. Use the link attached to get to the home page and search for marinas in Monmouth and look in Middlesex county. You may also want to do other web searches to find other marinas around. Good luck.

Buzzards Bay Marina

As far as I know, Brownell doesn't own any moorings.Nor does it it have a boatyard in the classic sence. What Brownell does do is haul alot of boats, build alot of boat stands and build alot of the best hydrolic boat trailers that money can buy. Tom Brownell invented the hydrolic boat trailer. Boats that they don't store get delivered to the owners home. I think Brownell does do some repair but their not known for boat repair or boat building anymore. If someone is interested, Mattapoisett Boatyard owns and maintaines some three-hundred moorings in Mattapoisett Harbor. Mattapoisett Harbor is open to the south east and is shallow so be advised...it gets quite bumpy in there. I used to work at Mattapoisett Boatyard and have seen six footers in the harbor. You would also be further up to the north east in Buzzards Bay so for a sailboat this means that you have to beat that much longer into the prevailing south west wind and when you have a foul tide Buzzars Bay can give you a real ride. Anyway...well,I guess if ya got a boat ya gotta put somewhere, right? Hope this helps, Dennis

Atlantic Highlands

Richard, Tom is exactly right. The Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers can be quite tricky if you're not too familiar with them. They're both shallow, and the draw bridges are a pain. Your best bet IMO would be Atlantic Highlands Municipal harbor. It's a great stop for transients. If no transient moorings are available, there's a nice anchorage with about 8 to 10 feet depth at low tide. Atlantic Highlands has a lot of nice restaurants within walking distance of the marina and Rumson is a cab ride away if you need to visit. John

Another question for the mass area

Would any off you guys recommend another area to put my boat for about a week besides the buzzards bay area? Because I'll be sailing south down the east coast I could stop either north or south of there if there is a better place. Ho and thanks for all the great advise to everyone.

There are several choices in Narragansett Bay

If you are comming down the coast, then Narragansett Bay in RI is a great stop. Besides the obvious stop of Newport, there are several marinas in the bay that can accomodating you. Some include East Passage, about an hour sail up the bay from Newport, Jamestown, and Dutch Harbor on the other side of the island from Jamestown. Narragansett Bay

I am in a marina that is ideally suited for you. It's a good 2-3 hr trip up from Newport, but it's secure, entirely enclosed and easily accessible from the highway. Try Brewer's Sakonnet Marina (www.byy.com)in Portsmouth, RI and located at the northern tip of Acquidneck Island. They have a marina up near you in Freeport and 19 others along the MA and CT shore. A call to them wouldn't hurt. Ask for Dave or Jay. This would also give you the option to check out Narragansett Bay.
