Yeah, I sure do. I seem to remeber reading several articles on this subject and they all conclude that you should keep the transmission in reverse when not in use.
iwas a power boat owner for 30 years [trawler]and just bought a 99 450 and new nothing of sailing.when i finally got the hang of it,which i really love and plan to head south,it took me awhile to find out what in hell was the noise,i need not say no more.
I was told that putting the boat in reverse was the thing to do with a folding prop. However, it seems that leaving the three-bladed prop in neutral allows it to spin and create less drag. If the noise bothers you and you aren't looking for speed I guess it's okay to leave it in reverse.
I do that when racing, I have not noticed any noise when in neutral, but after reading all the posts about the subject I thought I would give it a try.The only thing that I havn't done is put the GPS on it to verify if there is an actual difference in speed.Regards.Bruce.Neon Moon
On my 340 I put the transmission in reverse while sailing to prevent the prop from free-wheeling. I understand that some transmissions may wear as they do not get proper lubrication with only the rear shaft turning. I have the original factory 2 blade prop. Assume you mean shift lever, not throttle. This question comes up about every 6 months or so. Maybe you should re-post in the Torresen Forum and see what Gordon has to say. I have never heard of anyone's transmission failing from leaving in neutral, but I'm not a diesel mechanic.
I researched this awhile back and learned that you are definitely supposed to sail with the trans in reverse. The only problem for me is that mine gets jammed in reverse after sailing for several hours. Sometimes if I start the engine without engaging neutral on the throttle control I can shift out. Most of the time though I have to go below and manually shift it out at the trans after the engine is started. Anyone else have this problem? I'm guessing the clutch is hanging up. Does this mean it's time for some servicing? My mechanic says the engine/trans are fine. Should I check with someone else?
Mine seems to go back to neutral albeit with some added friction but it has not got stuck there. While I have not tried this I thought I read somewhere that it was okay to start the engine in reverse if necessary. I could be wrong so maybe someone could help verify.w
