I recently picked up an 82 h30. this is my first boat so im in need of suggestions. the boat was dry-docked 9 yrs ago and abandoned. it was winterized and in good condition when docked but a hatch was left un secured and the boat flooded with about 8in of water. so you can imagine what kind of renovations will be needed. I got the boat for almost nothing an im very excited about fixing her up. any suggestions about refurbishing teak, and holly, general clean up, electrical and plumbing maintainence, etc would be greatly appreciated!!!! please help

Welcome aboard, Jeffrey ! If you look at the Owner Mods section for your boat, you'll find most of the warts to be concerned with for that model.. You've hit the right answer with wiring and wood and stuff.. the only other thing that comes up is the carbon steel I beam under the floor that supports the mast.. be ready to replace that..
Here is an example:

Cool ! The floor does not look de-laminated ..might be re-claimable... did the water get into the transmission and engine??
I note very nice wood slats on the hull side of the quarterberth .. I don't think that was original..

amazingly, the floor isn't delaminated and the wood seems in good shape. all in all she looks like she needs little more then a shitload of elbow grease and patience. my plan concerning the engine is to replace all fluids, filters, and batteries. (where r the batteries?>). i seem to have lost the motor pic. what about lubricating the tranny and shaft before initial start up. how do i check the integrity of the tranny and shaft

Jeff, welcome aboard. From your pictures, it looks do-able as long as the engine works.

Seems like you might want to start making a list. Included should be a list of websites and vendors for all of your systems.

Don't know what you know mechanically, although you did say this was your first boat, we still don't know how handy or knowledgeable you are. Like, "I know all about diesel engines since I was a farmer and know all about tractor engines, but this is my first boat." Understand?

Even engines have their own sub-systems: fuel, electrical, mechanical and plumbing for raw water.

So, good luck and start out step-by-step. We're all here to help.

Jeffrey,
Get a copy of Don Casey's "This Old Boat". It would be a great place to start, then use this forum for clarification, if needed. Check your local library for any of his or Nigel Calder's books.
I know this may start a debate (not my intentions) but my diesel was shot, so I converted to electric propulsion. If I ever buy another boat I'll shop for one without an engine. Just a thought...depends upon how and where you use your boat.
Terry
P.S., Welcome aboard!

Batteries should be behind the engine on a platform and in front of the fuel tank underneath the cockpit. There should be an access panel in the quarterberth. She should clean up nicely. Post more pictures! We like pictures. I'd like to see the engine and how the V berth looks up front. I love my79. You'll love the way she'll sail. Wonderful boat. You have Cherubini Hunter, so don't overlook that forum.

Good luck....

Bleach and a little soft scrub will probably remove much of the gunk. For tough stains especially rust a small amount of muriatic acid on a little rag carefully applied with lost of ventilation and water available will remove a lot of stains but you MUST have acid proof gloves on.....DON'T MIX CHEMICALS....

If you need to replace the flooring if your boat is like my 1982 H30 the flooring is spot glued to the fiberglass deck. Put it up use a little acetone to remove the glue and use vinyl (from Home Depot) flooring to replace the sections. Not as fancy as the wood but indestructible.

Important that you check the transmission. The rear seal is low and would be well below the water stain. There's a plug in the back , drain it and if there is any water in it you'll need a clutch rebuild.

All electric lines for the bilge bump need to be replaced I also think that the domestic water bump in lower locker below the starboard cockpit locker it's probably toast as well.

The tops of the batteries are above the water stain so they are probably OK unless they froze in that case toast too. Take them out and load test them at an auto parts store....

Electric connectors on the depth sensor or speed log are probably toast too. They are not meant to get wet.

Any electric line that run below the water stain need to be replaced....... water will cause corrosion and will either fail or may cause a file. This includes the antenna cable if it is under the floor.
