i decided to add a small bilge pump for nuisance h 2 0 from shower. tried unsuccessfully for 3 hours to fish new hose down to the bilge location from proposed location for new (uninstalled yet) thru hull. (admittedly i was using a pretty rusty old fish tape...) does any one have any tricks to make this job simpler ? (i am trying to minimize the length of hose so am trying to run it thru a compartment that already has a few hoses in it. the fish tape hook keeps get-ing stuck on wire ties etc. .. not a fun way to spend memorial day. )

MI,
I have used what is called fishing wire for years now.
I have a Greenlee 50 foot spool of 1/4" wide flat metal.
I have used this to fish both elec. wire & hose.
When fishing the wire thru, I first bend the lead part in a loop & wrap ductape
around it for a smoother transitioning when feeding/pushing it thru.

If it shows up where you want it, tape the hose to it & pull it back thru.
There may be areas where when getting to this point, you may have to continue your fish separately from point a to point b in the next section.

Mine also has an attachment to capture the hose for pulling it back thru.

It can & does work with a little patience.

Did this a few weeks ago, the original hose was a corrugated type hose, like a vacuum cleaner hose. we ran a garden hose inside the original bilge hose and taped the new, smaller bilge hose to it to pull it through. No easy task, we used a smaller 1 1/8" hose as a replacement for the original 1 1/2" hose.

Shadow... It was a One and an eighth verses One and a half.. About three eights smaller.
Sure an eighth would be mighty small.

This my fishing, probing, tracing the curves of a channel. It not a tape but an extendable set of flexing fiberglass rods.

I have uses them to tape a flexible camera to and get precision positioning.

I just got this cool plumbing snake that we use to make sure high point Head discharge hose was clear, but it will snake around corners and it is "hand" driven.

Are you saying that your shower drains into your bilge? I would highly recommend that you install a real shower sump, properly plumbed. You might have to cut a few U's into frames etc. below the floorboartds, but it would be well worth it.
The last thing one wants is grey water in the bilge.

hose trick: with a vacuum suck a string/cord through an existing (to be abandoned) larger hose then pull the new smaller hose thru with it. BTW keep the pull line pointed shape:(>)with no sharp edge to hang up on a curve, bump or connector. If that didn't work try using the to be abandoned larger hose as the pull cord. BEWARE that you may need to put the [to be abandoned larger hose] back where it was in the first place if that doesn't work, so tie a pull string on it so you can pull it back in place if nessary. if that did work you now have a new added pull string available for future stuff

I like fiberglass rods for pulling wires/hoses...
I have a one piece 6’ and two sets of 33’ in 3’ screw together sections from harbor freight for mast work.
Used last weekend for pulling in new hoses to hotwater tank. Worked great

Not my idea but this worked when I ran a new hose from the head to the holding tank. Just before pulling the 1.5 hose, I coated the outside with KY jelly and that made the hose slide in with no problem at all. The KY is water soluble and evaporated away completely.

I use solid copper electrical wire for getting through unreachable areas. Just the right stiffness and can be pre-bend for a direction to take. Just my 2 ct.
