Any reason not to go with 6mm for clew reef line

I will run a reef line through my clew to a jam cleat on the boom near the mast. About 17 feet of line in total, about 8.5 feet when reefed.

Is there any reason not to use 6mm (1/4 inch) for this?

I see recommendations for the 8mm (5/16).

Rational for the larger line is often that it feels easier to hold than 1/4 “. It is up to you.

It is not like there will be excessive force on the line. I would use polyester line. Nylon will be too stretchy.

There is a fair amount of force on the clew when reefed at least as much as with a full sail because the wind speed is higher.

8mm will be easier on the hands.

Do you have the reef line run to a winch? Or are you pulling it by hand?

pulling by hand may be easier with a bit larger Line.
