Carry on unit in the forward hatch. Forget the brand...Cruise Aire maybe...around 5-7000 BTU. Worked great on my 28.5 years ago. Need a fan on the salon table to help distribute air to the back area of boat.

Second the vote for a carry on unit.. Had one on my H27 and it worked great, even on the hottest days down in the Florida Keys. Don't remember what the brand was, but it looked very similar to this one at West Marine.

Cheers,
Brad

Not sure how similar your boats are but a friend's 28.5 has a $100. unit mounted in the head. The window unit's "outside" sticks into the starboard cockpit locker. He props the locker seat open a few inches when it is running. He has a floor fan that distributes the air through the cabin. Works very well, inexpensive, and no carrying or storage issues.

A/C on H28

We sail a Hunter 28.5 on a lake just saouth of Dallas. I use my Cruise - air when we weekend on her at the dock. Even on the hottest days here in Texas it keeps the inside very comfortable. Keeps the wife and dog happy so I am happy.

I have a 28.5 with a $100. window unit in the companion way, top board slat to hold in in place. Towells or foam on the sides. Works great, just have to crawl out over it when in place. Tryed it in the front hatch with a sleeping bag around it to seal, but wasn't real happy with the air movement. Used it mostly to sleep under at night.

I found this project link.

http://www.c34.org/projects/projects-air-conditioning-2.html

Looks pretty involved but is detailed. I also saw where someone had installed a small window unit in their forward birth and vented the hot air up through the chain locker. He drained any condensation into the bilge. I thought it look like a great idea, but I can't find the link.

Anytime you can use a small $100 unit over a small $1000 unit, I would find a way to make the $100 uinit work everytime. I'm one of those sailors that has more time than money and a pretty good tool box.

I used a window AC unit...

installed in a drop board replacement framework on my previous 27 footer. I built a set of drop-in screen boards first, and substituted the lower one with the AC mounting panel, closing the upper screened openings with slide-in plastic panels.

The garage door opeining handle on the AC unit was bolted to the frame above the center of balance, making it easy to install and remove. Climbing over it once installed is another story...

Here are 3 pics of this set up for ideas:

a/c unit in quarter berth

I have a Wint-Aire portable ac unit that occupies quarter berth, vents through port side coaming, and drains into bilge. Hatch and companionway solutions require unit removal before sailing.
