any ideas on 6hp out board?

ive got a 1990 johnson sail master 6hp 2 cycle. it starts 1st or 2nd pull every time, runs great from idle to full throttle... but will quit after 15 mins of running and wont start back up for a couple hours. ive tried with gas cap fully closed and open, no change. does any one have any ideas?

Have you tried squeezing the fuel bulb after it quits to verify its not the fuel pump or otherwise starving for fuel? Make sure fuel is getting to the carb. You can remove the line at the fuel pump that goes to the carb and squeeze the bulb watching for fuel.

Also, check for spark after it quits. You could have a coil thats bad, sometimes they fail when hot. Even though it has two coils, one dead one can make starting a twin near impossible.

If fuel is getting to the carb, and its got spark, but still wont run, you have to start digging deeper. Run a compression test. Sometimes they can leak between cylinders when hot. You may have to remove the carb and see if the fuel is physically getting into the bowl. I dont know how that could be intermittent, but you just have to test everything.

When was the last time you changed the fuel hose and bulb?

Do you treat your fuel?

Tank vent; try actually removing the cap and not just loosening the vent. Sometimes the vents don't vent. However, like Anchor says, it sounds like a bad coil or stator coil. When hot they can open and take quite a while to cool enough to re-contact.. Parts are readily available

Kinda obvious, but worth mentioning - are you sure your water pump is working? Do you have a steady stream of water coming out the back? If not, you may be overheating the motor itself, causing it to tighten up...

i do have a steady stream of water peeing out. i replaced the primer ball and fuel line last year when i started having this problem. i dont treat it with anything other than stabilizer over the winter. the tank is still an older metal one... maybe thats it? ill get a trash can full of water under it and run it till it quits and run some spark tests. thanks for the ideas, folks
