Moonwalk
I am the an owner of a moonraker 26 an I have a very short rudder so I can't point highenough for races any ideas for a new set up and what are some good clets
Moonraker youre on the right track with your rudder, I had the opourtunity to sail with 2 other 26s this summer and the boat with the largest rudder pointed the best, he has also 50mm xtra under his fixed keel.
I have made a new rudder from a 6mm sheet of bis 80, It was 280mm x 600mm now 350mm x 650mm.
Not all moonrakers are the same under the water line but they all suck going up wind. I call it the moonwalk, the hull pointing about 5 to 10 degrees from your heading. I recon Mr Sedlemyer placed the mast step 600mm further forward to keep the cockpit clear, fitted an under sized rudder to make it easy to launch and retreive, used a scungy udersized swinging centre board to get the 2m head room, the centre board wouldnt be so bad if it stayed down, but if you get anywhere near 5 knots up wind it swings back and you need 20 degrees of helm to keep her nose down.
Thats what the funny reveberating noise is, the loose keel winch line.
Just as well they can make up a bit down wind.
Its hard to get speed when the old girls are built for comfort.
I have been fitting out jammers to replace most of the original cleats.
This winter the outboard is out and a sail drive is in, should make cruising a lot more pleasant.
