Any Hunter 22 owners out there? Will this trailer work well for a H22?

Hi everyone,

I'm a proud new owner of a 1983 hunter 22 with a centerboard/swing keel and no trailer. I've got the opportunity to purchase the trailer in the attached photo, however.

This trailer is adjustable to fit a 19' to 23' foot boat, and it can handle a gross capacity weight of 4150lbs.

I have not yet had my boat out of the water to see the underside, but as I understand it the centerboard is always projecting beneath the bottom of the hull at least a foot.

I am concerned that this trailer's bunks are not high enough to allow proper clearance for the centerboard (in its retracted state).

Can any of you H22 owners offer your thoughts on this and any other concerns about this trailer. I know a double axel trailer would be better, but this one is available now and close to me.

Any thoughts on the process and feasability of raising the height of the bunks?

Thanks, in advance, for your time and assistance.

It looks to be inadequate for a sailboat without extensive modifications. It lacks a tongue extension, it lacks a bow stop, it lacks proper curved bunks and the risers. It also lacks a keel rest and guide and mast carrier. It would be much easier to adapt a trailer already set up for a sailboat.

I agree with Benny.

My trailer may be a bit overdone for the boat but the two bunks I have for the support of the hull are probably 10-12 feet long and supported in 4 places each. there is also a 3rd bunk running down the center of the trailer that the keel sits on while on the trailer. Plus guide on rails to help steer the keel onto its bunk. Plus two axles, etc. Probably cheaper to find an appropriate trailer.

The bunks would definitely need to be higher. Here are a couple of pictures of mine. The first picture of the boat on the trailer when I first bought it, and the second of a work in progress of replacing the bunks and carpet this past summer.

Ben&Di, wow, those are two great pictures that you included in your post. thanks for those! Am I correct that your H22 is also the centerboard model and not the fixed keel? By the way, I love Sacandaga lake. I have land in Saratoga and go to the Adirondacks frequently to canoe and camp. What make of a trailer is that in your pictures? I can't make out the logo.

Benny 7 sn0wman, I appreciate your advice and opinions about adapting this trailer vs. purchasing one designed for a sailboat. It would definitely take time and money and energy to modify this trailer to have 10 foot long bunks and a keel rest board.

It sounds like it'll be easier & cheaper to just pay $600 for a space in the yard for the winter.

Thanks again,

For what it is worth. You might find a boat trailer shop and they would be able to make the mods for your boat.
It might be very affordable. It is not that hard to modify a trailer.
Good luck.
