Any Hunter 19 drivers out there?

I've been looking to upgrade my trusty 12' Super Snark to something in the 18-26 foot range. Our local sailboat dealer has two Hunter 19's on the lot. I think one's a '95 and the other's a '96. He's asking $5800 for the 95 and $6700 for the 96. Both are in pretty good shape (the 96 especially is practically brand new). Both include a trailer. I'd basically be single-handing it as the kids are still a bit young to really be an effective crew. Any feedback on the 19 would be helpful. Trailering, set-up, take down, sailing characteristics, etc... How about racing a 19? Thanks!

I love mine

My 1996 19 has been great. Knock on wood, it doesn't leak a drop, easy to launch. I don't have small children but the previous owner did and they spent many nights on the boat. I handle mine single handed often, but it would help if you could teach one of the kids to handle a boat hook enough to help you when docking. Most of my sailing experience has been with boats in the 37-40 ft range and small Hobie cats, so the boat was a good compromise when I wanted a trailerable boat. The prices don't sound bad either.

To Answer Your Questions

On re-reading your reply, I didn't answer some of your questions: 1) The boat trailers well. The previous owner of mine towed it from Texas to Florida, no problems. 2) I am slow and methodical and it takes me a little under an hour from highway to launch (single-handed) 3) The boat sails well but is a little tender. The boat motors well. Mine has a Tohatsu 5 horse and maybe uses 1 quart per hour of fuel at 5-6 knots.

Great boat

I would agree with Robert. Easy to trailer, though all I do is drive to the ramp at the beginning of the summer( I have a mooring). Easy to set up (one person can but two is easier). A bit tender in gusty winds, but you get used the sailing charateristics quickly. I also have the 5hp Tohatsu and it is plenty of power. I would jump at the '96 model for that price(assuming it includes the trailer). I bought my 1993 model a year ago for $6,400. If the boat does not have roller furling, I highly recommend adding it. I singlehand 80-90 percent of the time and love it. Check out reviews here on this model(93-96). I don't think you will find one owner who is not happy. Oh yeah, racing. Haven't had the opportunity and I'm not sure how it would do. Racing seems to be a 50/50 between boat and sailing skills. A great cruising boat, though.
