there really isn't room in the bow of a 356 to get a thruster in that would be deep enough to be effective. I found one company that was willing to engineer a retractable thruster but it called for removing the water tank, compromising the vee berths, and cutting out a section of the hull support...and a lot of money! I said no ;-). the only option that might be feasible is the external thruster that is advertised, and it's expensive. I would want to see drag figures for it before I even considered it as an option

Re: H356 bow thruster

me neither! the price tag was $14K!
You'll find that the 356 is very maneuverable, especially in reverse, and if you back in and use judicial pulses of power you can dock her pretty easily.

I have a H410 that I normally moor stern first in my slip. My record for the most number of attempts to back in, with a cross wind and current (14 ft tides), is five. If you handle the dock teasers with good humour, then you don't need a bow thruster. My wife has one on her list of future purchases, so we have looked at thrusters that mount externally. Again expensive, but avoids the room issue. What I am waiting for is some innovative individual to design a method for using an electric long shaft outboard as a temporary bow thruster!

More info

What exactly is the problem that you need a thruster for like in and out of your slip or just any time docking any place.
How about what type of prop do you have, some other type props have been very good at improving handling of a boat especially in reverse and forward and prop walk much inproved and a diferent prop so much less $$$$ and a lot less equipment added to your boat that could be a problem down the road.

For what it's worth, I took some good docking training and it made a HUGE difference for me. Also pays to have your first mate/admiral participate.

Re: bow thruster

Well, I thought so too-but there isn't enough depth in the 356 bow to make an effective tunnel type work. This was a retractable thruster and the price included all of the glass work.

I'm working on installing a bowthruster with a tunnel on my 356. I know you in US don't understand the need for this but we need it very often as we dock on different islands every day on a cruise and these islands are often crowded and shallow. We always dock with the bow, very seldom with stern even at a pier or in harbors. You can hopefully follow the work on www.valetta.n.nu. Click on Projekt and scroll down to Bogpropeller (bowthrust)

FWIW - I contacted YachtThruster for a quote on one of their external EThrust units for our 340. More out of curiousity than anything. The drag stats were actually very surprising, so that wasn't going to be an issue.

The price, however, proved to be a different story. Try upwards of $5000.

Needless to say, we won't be equipped with a bowthruster anytime soon.

I have finally got a bowthuster installed on my h356. It's a Side Power SE60. I will publish pictures from it on the pages Owners modification soon. Tomorrow the boat will be launched and I can test to see howi it works. Looks good ashore.

We installed an e thruster on our H36 this year. Used it for the first time on opening day here in Seattle, had an opportunity to use it to get out of a difficult situation when rafting up and again when pulling the anchors. The cost was about 6300.plus the cost of batteries and cables less than 500. We took two days to instal, not difficult, except the part where I had to drill a 2" hole in the bottom of our beloved little boat. :)

I installed the Exturn this year, I did not have room for a tunnel due to water tanks. This is by far the best modification I have completed to date. It was pretty simple to install and works great.

The boat is launched and the SidePower SE60 bowthruster tested in reality. Works good and is really a good help/support in narrow places. It is placed just behind the watertank.

H-356 bow thruster

Hey Patrik
Looks good. I thought wrong on this. I did not think I had enough room in my H356 bow area however after looking at your install,it can be done. Any issues so far ,pro or con.Is it working OK.
What size motor are you using and can it handle any current etc.?
thanks for the pics

Patrik,

How does the thruster you installed work, is it pneumatic, what pressurizes the system?

Hi
It's a Sidepower SE60 and we have been out for a week now and used it several times. It works really well and saved many situations. It's electric and the preassure is 60 kg. I think it's possible to install a 80 kg pressure. You can find more info on www.valetta.n.nu/projekt. Use google to translate.
Good luck
Patrik

Hi Patrik,
I have just bought a 356, and have to manoeuver in very tight spaces, often with lots of wind/tide. I have seen your post in owners mods thank you. (the page you mention above is not working)
Two Q's please:
Would you suggest the 60kg, or the 80kg now you have experience with it?
Did you notice any change in speed of the boat?
Thanks,
Neil
