I'm looking into purchasing a tiller pilot for my H-25. Anyone have any experiences or recommendations to sway me toward or away from any particular product? Thanks! Ms. Toad's Wild Ride

ST-1000

The Raytheon ST-1000 H23 is recommended by the manufacturer for boats to 26 feet, but it blows the 15A fuse when my H23 heels hard in the gusts (weather helm). If you know how to balance your boat and sailplan to kill the weather helm then this might be the unit for you. Most places have them on sale for less than $450 with the hand-held remote (list price is about $600). I installed mine in less than 2 hours, and you will probably need a couple of extensions for the actuator rod, depending on where the tillerpilot is mounted. Good luck! Peter S/V Raven

Autopilot for Hunter 25

The last issue of Practical Sailor Magazine (Vol. 27, Jan. 1, 2001) just rated tiller pilots and would probably answer your questions and give you a good amount of background info too. I'm at work and don't have it with me now. However, there is some teaser info on their web site www.practical-sailor.com.

ST-1000 Works Fine

The ST-1000+ has been on our H23.5 for a couple of years and we've never blown a fuse. We sure have plenty of weather helm too. A tiller pilot is great for light wind and when motoring but won't replace a person at the helm. You'll need to de-power in stiff breezes and gusty winds can cause it to hunt a lot. There are several parameters that can be re-programmed into the ST-1000+ to help accomodate different conditions and it can be controlled by most GPS units. The small drain on the battery has surprised me. Ken S/V Wouff Hong

What about the ST-2000+ Tiller Pilot?

One of my winter projects is to install a tiller pilot. From my research I had concluded that for my H-25.5 the ST-2000+ was the pilot for me. When I read through the ST-1000+ literature my boat was right on the edge of the ST-1000's operating parameters. So I had planed to get the ST-2000+. Does anyone have experience with the ST-2000? Is the extra muscle necessary/unnecessary? From what I have seen the H-25 and the H-25.5 are very similar.

ST 2000+ Works on H23

I have an Autohelm ST2000+ on my H23 and use it a lot while sailing solo. I've never had it trip off line (yet), and I've been pleasantly surprised at the low battery drain. Jerry

Autohelm 1000 is Great!

The Autohelm I installed six months ago is fantastic and has allowed me to really extend my cruising area when singlehanding. Seems to change course and follow very well......and I'm looking forward to interfacing with a GPS!
