I'm specifically looking for any positive or negative experiences. Have you had any claims, and how were they handled? What is the premium cost experience over the last 3 years? Stable or large yearly increases? I currently have Zurich and they have increased 39% over the last three years and 21% of this overall increase has been for 2008-9. On two very minor claims (I was not at any fault for either) they have been excellent and very fair.

mine may be a unique experience Rich

When we bought out first (of two) 40.5s, a fire at the marina totalled the boat which was 2 weeks old. Nationwide tried to depreciate the value (despite it being an agreed-value policy) and it took us a year and two lawyers to finally get them to make a fair settlement whereupon they cancelled our policy making it difficult for us to acquire new insurance at a reasonable price. All this for a problem we were not responsible for. Among the things they refused to pay for were charts, a set of wood plugs, handheld deplicate chartplotter, etc for which we had receipts. Our current underwriter, Zurich, just renewed our policy at around $1300/yr.

Nationwide is not on my side...

They just cancelled my homeowners after 15 years. We had one small claim after Hurricane Jeanne (2006), two more direct hits and no claims and they cancelled us. I wouldn't let them insure a rollerskate. Just my 2 cents!

Gotta Agree with saltygator

I had NW Auto. After I was hit, with no fault of mine own, I had to pay $2000 above my deductible for new and original parts for a vehicle 90 days old. They wanted to use used and aftermarket parts. I sais no way and had to pay out of pocket. As soon as the repairs were completed I dropped NW like a rock.

OK, so is there ANYONE that likes Nationwide?

I understand that unhappy customers are the ones most likely to chime in. Is there anyone out there that has something good to say? BTW, my Zurick insurance costs for the last couple of years is: 1997 h40.5, Hull 145K, 1% deductible 2008-9 $1577 2007-8 1298 2006-7 1134 2005-6 1084 Since 2006-7 they have increased 39%!!, and over 21% this year over last. My agent said everyone was increased this year, but couldn't tell me if all percentage increases were about the same. He said, "Ya know, it was a bad hurricane season last year....". Anyway, if Nationwide is a bad provider, can anyone recommend an alternate with whom you have had good experience?

yes ! i've had them for about 17yrs.

Over the yrs i've had two claims. the first was with a torn sail that was severly flogged, when a storm came up unexpectedly and my only crew was a 10 yo young lady and i did'nt want to endanger her to try to get a head sail down. repairs to the sail were over $1500. adjuster was at the sail loft within 24hrs and i had my sail back within 3 days. second was noted about 8 months after the fact when it was discovered during spring prep that our rudder post and prop were damaged the previous season when we hit something submerged in the night during a race. adjuster was out to the boat within 24hrs again and i had a check for the repairs within a few days. s/v Que Pasa?

Have you tried BoatUS?

They were the least expensive I found, but I'm on the "other" coast. No storms no lay ups. Whatever you get just be sure it's a "real" yacht/marine policy and covers pollution liability, salvage, agreed value, ect. Dwain

BoatUS doesn't want

anything to do with my 40 year old boat. Not liability and not hull.

Geico Ins.

I have Geico for the past 2 years, I just received my renewal and they actually dropped the premium!! I guess because I had no claims with them. I would stay away from Boat US. They decided to total my old boat even though the marina gave me a much lower estimate for the same job. After that they didn't want to insure my new boat.

Rich, I've been with BoatUS for 13 years with no problems at all. I've heard good things about AMICA which is domiciled in RI. Have you checked them out?

Nationwide

I had nationwide home owners for about 15 years when I get a bill in the mail for $15 or so as a charge for cancelling my policy!! I went down to the local office and asked what was up. They advised they cancelled my policy when my son turned 16. The only notification I had of the cancellation was the cancellation charge! I had been driving a brand new $36,000 car for two months without insurance. They refused to re-instate my policy as long as my 16 year old son lived with me. I walked out in total disgust. I will never do business with these jerks again. PS. Allstate insured me and my son less than one hour later.
