The orginal 9.9hp Chysler has finally hit the level of maint frustration and problems that it's got to go. Have been looking at the Nissan 9.8hp 4 stroke (81 lbs). Anyone have experience (good or bad) with this model? They make a 25" long shaft that I'm assuming will be long enough. Not sure how the rated 81lbs stacks up to the current motor, I expect somewhat heavier. Any comments or suggestions appreciated! Kevin & Margo Hermes '78 Cat 25' - Great Lakes, IL

I recently bought a 1985 Catalina-25. It had a 9.9hp-2-stroke-Tohatsu...which to my understanding...is actually made by Nissan. It was 15 years old do I decided to replace it. I looked at the mercuries, Yamahas, and evinrudes but decided on the new 9.8hp-4-stroke Tohatsu. It is one of the lightest engines out there and had a very good review in 2 boating magazines. It is also less expensive than the others. I would expect the nissan to be similar since they are essentially the same engine. I installed it myself(easy to do) and I love it. It has an electric start, and is 20" long. I considered a 25" but this one is more than long enough. It is very quiet, produces very little smoke, and burns approx. 1gallon/hr. of gas. I would definitely recommend this brand.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a new one of those and am a little concerned wit: tilt clearance issues - is that a problem for you? Bracket selection is key as well. Does yours allow raising the motor all the way out of the water? Thanks for any information you can provide.
