Any clever storage ideas for companionway panels?

I am interested in finding a safe and convenient storage spot for the companionway door panels while sailing. Has anyone come up with a good scheme for protecting the polycarbonate

How many sections?

Doug: How many sections do you have? We took some old pillow cases and sewed them to together. Then you can sew the case into a section that would be about the size of each board. The you can put the sections in the case and store them underneath the bunk cushions.

I made a canvas "file system" that

has a separate slot for each "board". (Imagine one of those expanding files.) It is maybe 20" wide and around three feet long. It has u-shaped brackets sewn into to its top so that it hangs from the top of the door to the head on my H26. (It faces the galley.) As I enter the boat, I unlock and shove the slider back, lift out each of the companionway boards and put them into their little slots in the canvas "thing". Then I step down inside and lift the whole unit off the top of the door and store inside the head right beside the sink. When ready to close-up the boat, I reverse the process: Hang the unit on the outside of the door, step into the cockpit and pull each of the boards out and put them in place. I added little pouches that hold my winch handle, flashlight and padlock. Jim S/V Grizzly Bear P.S. If you make one of these, be sure to make each slot roomy enough. I miscalculated my seam widths and now each board fits a little too snuggly. But it still works. P.S.S. There are lots of other solutions discussed in the Archives too.

Hatch Storage

I cover my companion way with a 8x10 tarp when the boat is not in use. When I take the tarp off i fold it along with the hatch panels and put them in the port cockpit storage.

Panel Storage

I built a wood frame at the bottom of the stairs between the stairs and bathroom wall. I made it as wide as the space, so I use it for the panels, the grapple pole and more.

Under seat in cockpit

On our 25.9, the seat on the starboard side lifts up and there is a spot just the right size to hold them securely. I don’t know if you have the same situation but we didn’t find it until we owned the boat over a year. We use to just sandwich them (on edge) between the seams of the cushions in the saloon.

Companionway doors

I made a “canvas file system” for my boards and mounted that on the port side of the entranceway (98’ H26). Did that for a couple of years, then made companionway doors for the boat. I used spring loaded hinges so the doors come off and can be stored where the slat bag was. Just mounted a couple of 2” straps with snaps to hold the doors in place when I didn’t want them on. Once you’ve had companionway doors, you’ll never hassle the slats on a boat again. I posted pictures of them in the photo forum some time ago. Do a search on winter project in the photo forum and match all words.
