WE are researching the market and wonder if there are any boat brands we shouldn't consider.

Consider for WHAT?

Unless YOU can figure out what it is that you are trying to ask, how can you expect US to find an answer....... Flying Dutchman "1 gek kan meer vragen dan 1000 wijzen kunnen beantwoorden" (old Dutch saying)

Buccaneer

Hank, I think he's referring to a thread he started a couple days ago about wanting to buy a boat. Dave, I'd definitely steer clear of Buccaneers. I actually know a couple of people who own them and they sail them all the time but they're not highly regarded and resale value is zilch, not to mention sailing ability. Some folks have problems with MacGregors as well, though they do serve a purpose. They're not terrific sailing boats BUT they can plane! :) Seriously, if you're primarily going to be river or lake sailing with a family

Every boat brand is good for some type of use...

that is why we should try to refrain from blanket statements about boat brands (even in response to poorly formulated questions). Broad negative characterizations are unfair to the builders as well as the owners of such boats, as many on this board can personally attest when it comes to Hunter (or Beneteau, or Catalina, or............) bashing. How old of a boat are you looking for?

My experience tells me that a newer diesel powered boat will give you less problems. If you are looking for a fixer upper who cares? If you are looking for less maintenance and more sailing start newer and smaller and work your way up! Sailing is the best. We've done powerboats and sail. We love sailing!

Diesel?

With all due respect, the old atomic 4 is not only a classic but is a very reliable engine. If it has been properly maintained it can actually have fewer mystery problems. As far as it being gas, the vast majority of powerboats use gas and manage to function fairly well if the routine precautions are taken. I would not write off an engine just because it is gas. After all these are sailboats.

Advantage of the common names

Like this web site for instance. If you are going to sail, live on, maintain, improve, and enjoy a sailboat, there are huge advantages in joining a group of others who keep our support suppliers busy with our boats, and share knowledge in so many ways. That argues for the boat names with lot's of hulls out there doing their thing. And against the rare exceptions. David Lady Lillie

Henk is Right

If you're looking for a boat, first define to those you ask for help what it is you're primarily going to do with it, what is your budget, where will you generally sail the boat, what are your sailing skills? Are you planning on buying a new boat? Will you need to trailer the boat? By just the sound of the question leads me to think this might be Dave's first boat. We've all surely been there, but with out some of these questions answered, Dave will never get his "right" answer. But one thing is for sure Dave, you're at the right forum and these folks are a lot of help. Best of Luck in your search.
