Oday 28' roller furling jib ... can't/won't unfurl! just got boat back in the water from 6 months on the hard, and first attempt to sail found the jib so tight all my strength on the jib sheet would not allow it to open but a few feet.
anyone came across this? I never have and don't know what to do?
any replies appreciated!
thanks.

It sounds like either your furling line is jammed in the drum or you have a wrap with a spare halyard up above. See if the line you use to roll it back up has gotten tangled and knotted up. You may need to unwrap it by hand so you take all load off of it to untangle it. If you have a spare halyard forward it may have gotten wrapped as you tried to unfurl the sail and jammed it. Look aloft, use binoculars if needed, see if anything at the masthead is jamming it up. Usually you can unjam a wrapped halyard from the deck but you might need to climb the mast, get the right safety equipment if you do that.

Interesting enough we had a situation with our O 28' this year too. This was our first yr putting it up since we bought it last yr. We recruited a friend to help us since it was a piece of cake to dismantle in the fall but we were unsure if we'd get it right to put it up. Anyway, we re-assembled the jib as we knew we took it apart. Our friend argued that she has NEVER in her sailing life seen a jib go up not using a spare halyard line. So, as she continued to press the issue to use the halyard, she soon found out it would not turn, as you mentioned. Bottom line, we have what is called a "flex furling system" and it does not use the spare halyard b/c it does not have a separate drum at the top, only the bottom. See if your system is the same as ours b/c when we used her method we could not get our jib to budge. If not, sorry I can't help....too new at this.
