hunter 33 bay shore
Hi, just wondering if anyone has any advice for me- I just bought a Hunter 33 and will be sailing it from east hampton to bay shore- will this be about a 3 day trip? My dad, who is an experienced boater, will be with us, and our 2 year old will also come. I have been told that the south shore of long island is not a great place for a larger sailboat, due to the shallow water- does anyone have a sailboat this size and keep it on the south shore?

"3 days" ??? ...are you kidding? it's a few hours sailing along the south shore. We sailed around the entire Island in 2 days. I've sailed and raced my boat in the Great South Bay many times. I draw 6' and there are some shallow areas to avoid but I don't know a single sailor in that area that hasn't run aground in the soft stuff. Use your charts and stay in the channels till you learn the topography. Use your knowledge when sailing in real skinny water. Slow down and warn everyone onboard to be prepared for the stop. After a grounding move all weight to the bow and use your engine to back away the same way you came in.

PS take the outside route. It's quicker and leaves you no chance of grounding till you're inside Fire Island.

Outside

I would go outside for sure with checking the weather for good weather outside and unless you have perfect weather outside leave the 2 year old home.
