Any advice on rebedding C-30 chain plates?

We recently bought a 1982 Catalina 30, with some evidence of leakage
at the chain plates. I would like to rebed these, and I have a general
idea of what it involves, but a few questions before I get started.

Any suggestions about the best sealant to use (polyurethane? polysulfide?)

Can I re-attach and tension the shrouds before the sealant has cured?
(I'd like to do all of them the same day, without taking the mast
down.)

How much work is it to fully remove the chain plates so that
I can check them for corrosion?

Anything else I should know?

Thanks!

Chain plates

If you chain plates are original, they are about 26 years old. I say buy new ones. My father had a Irwin 30 that a lower chain plate cracked and he lost his rig.
If you loosen both uppers a little at a time going back and forth from side to side on a day with little wind. You can put halyards out to rail to make yourself feel better. Then tighten back up and do the same for the lowers I feel you will be okay. I have seen it done.

Chain plates?

I have a '77 C30 and from what I remember of the newer models the chain plates on C30's go thru the deck and bolt to the bunkheads. If your getting leakage it is from the fittings that shroud the chain plates thru deck. I've re-sealed these on my boat. They are held in place with a couple of screws. I used a 3M sealant but don't remember the number. Use something that will stay flexable and don't be cheap, buy 3M. After you reseal I don't see any reason why you couldn't reattach the stays but I would hold off on sailing and flexing the seal untill it sets.
