The spiders are so bad at my marina now, that it only takes one day for them to build webs all over my boat. I've read that an open can of moth balls might help keep them away. Any other advice?

EPA and Pesticide

Unfortunately most insecticides - and especially those strong enough for spiders - are not authorized for use near any body of water (ocean or lake) by the EPA. Not sure if this applies to the no-Pest strips or even if they are still available.

Spiders

I have read, but not tried, that one ounce of real coconut oil mixed with water in a srpay bottle will rid you of spiders. Do not use essence of coconut oil. The real oil is available at health food stores. I think I will try it bacause they are exceptionally bad this year in S.C.

Flashlight and a Can of Raid

The spiders usually come out at night. The flashlight causes the web and occupant to stand out, one point blank shot and its over with in a few minutes. May sound strange but it cleans out the spiders and webs for about two weeks. This operation has a much high success rate if performed with an ice cold beer. Seems to improve the aim :)

My approach to spider control changes at

the companionway, outside I just knock down the webs and shake the sail covers overboard while saying here fishy, fishy, fishy. Inside I resort to digital control. I hold all of my digits on my right hand close together and pat the spiders on their little heads, then I wipe up their remains with a wet paper towel. Digital insect controll also works with flies, mosquitos and moths. ;)

fabric softener sheets

When I was involved with the Catalina 25 Association forum their Lake Michigan members who have spider problems mentioned that spiders stay away from drawers and liner areas where fabric softener sheets (the kind you throw into your clothes dryer) have been placed. Maybe they're sensitive to the charge or the chemicals...

pharachute in

They don't even need to be on the boat. They pharachute in at night on the wind and their webs. At one marina we couldn't leave the bimi up during the week because of how bad they were. We would fling a towel around when we got down to the boat to clear the webs and if they got inside we would bomb every so often.

Dock lines

We spray our dock lines too because this is a main entry ramp onto the boat. This helps tremendously.

Try Clorox bleach

I have found that a general cleanning of the boat with water diluted with clorox bleach keeps the spiders away. They don't like this stuff at all. Works great if you have an all white boat or need to bleach your teak.

Bounce dryer sheets! They really work

Just spread them around in your lockers, drawers, on your berths, I even put them under the sail cover on my main, that way it doesn't rain spiders every time I sail. They really do work. Tom s/v GAIA

Daemon

My friends and I use an insecticide called Daemon. It doesn’t stain fiberglass, no oils, water soluble. It clears the spiders till more drift back in on their webs. Usually a couple of weeks. Less in the spring more in the dry summer.

Spider Kill II

I just spray this product all over once a month. The spiders are not aboard my vessel at all. Two thumbs up for this product.

Leave the Spiders Alone

They eat the other more obnoxious bugs. But I guess you guys are thick with them, sorry but everything I can think of would hammer more than the itsey bitsey spiders. Look at it this way in a few weeks it will be too cold for them and they will go away. Wish I had somthing more than that George.

Thanks for all the advice

Thanks, I now have lots of stuff to try. I went to the boat just after dark last night and it was covered in webs. I counted at least 30-35 spiders.

George, At Least You do not Have to Deal With This Stuff

Squirrel on the Attack Florida Park AP WINTER PARK, Fla. (Aug. 10) - Several people attacked by a squirrel at Central Park said they had one word for the animal: nuts. On Wednesday some expressed frustration that the animal was not caught sooner, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Alisa Cox's son Carson, 3, was bitten by a squirrel several times and had a 2-inch wound on his leg after the incident, Cox said. James Klute said his 3-year-old son was also bitten on the calf while they were kicking a soccer ball at the park. Jim Hindman, meanwhile, said a squirrel bit and scratched both arms while he was sitting on a park bench. Longwood resident Dylan Osborne, 19, said that after the squirrel attacked the leg and shoe of a friend he trapped it under a bucket but released it two hours later when county animal-services workers didn't arrive. An official with animal-services said he was not aware of that incident but would check the records. City employees captured the animal with a litter grabber Tuesday. It died and is being tested for rabies. Officers had previously tried to subdue the animal with pepper spray.

Come on Rick,

Thought we just had a good natured feud goin on here! Please, no offense. Thought it was fun. I have total respect with all who have to deal with things that keep us from doing what we love to do. And, I do have to deal. For instance, most of the time I take my main cover off, I have a bat or 2 fly off. Not a huge deal, but they crap all over the place. Once I counted 4, as I raised my main! The geese are all over this place! Great to watch fly, but horrific to walk around the grounds. Recently, I noticed my wind vane had stopped moving. Seemed like it was stuck on the top of the mast. When I got back to my mooring ball I noticed 3 birds perched on top of neighbors wind vane, looking at mine. Ya, I thought of you.

It Is Fun, No Sweat

Just wanted show everyone what happens if you let them get too many and too close. Did you buy the scope for your Daisy yet? Caught part of a deal on TV about the geese seems like there are so many now they are eating the tundra way up north right down to mud. Seems like not only ought we lift all limits on the numbers of geese harvested it should be required to get a minumum before buying stamps to collect any other game. Wonder if you sent the bats down to Jeff if they would eat the spiders as they blew around? It would totally wig out my wife and daughter if a bat flew out of the sail cover they would never get on the boat again.

stay away from harmful poisonous chemicals

Yes, "dock" spiders can be nasty, big and ugly. Especially when sitting in your cockpit. If you want to keep them out of the cabin, stay away from bleach, and poison, as these same poisons are going to get on you and into the water that you sail on. Instead, get a mesh bag and inside of it, place the peels of 2-3 cucumbers. SOmething in the peels deters the spiders. I have also heard that ceder chips work very well (and they make the cabin smell good)

Inspite of all of the advise that has

filtered through here on this subject one thing has been overlooked. Spiders don't get "big, fat and ugly" on air. They catch bugs in their webs and eat them. Then they poop on the furniture and drop the empty shells on the deck. They don't like to touch people, just try to get one to walk around on your hand. They jump ship in a flash. They don't live very long but they lay a lot of eggs. Distroy the eggs when ever you find them. kill the spiders by hand or impliment when you can catch them. But above all remember if you have big spiders it is because they have been eating bugs that you would not be pleased to have in your boat.
