anybody have a good solution for a friction device to hold the rudder/tiller on a 240? I looked at a tiller tamer from Davis and it doesn't really mount to the 240 stern very well. I would like to come up with something to hold the tiller temporarily when singlehanding.

Cheap

I single hand alot. I often take a piece of line same diameter as the furling line. I cleat on one of the stern cleats. Take it forward of the clip that holds the tiller extension wrap it once then back to the opposite stern cleat. This works well up to 10 knots with limited wave action. I've sailed this way for hours at a time occassionly making minor adjustments to the tiller by bumping with my foot. A tiller pilot is the best solution if your looking for something reliable.

I agree with Sean...

I agree with Sean, I also singlehand often and I use the same technique of wrapping a line around the tiller with the line attached to the stern rail cleats on each side. I've been using this method since I bought my first Hunter a 23.5 in 1993. It is not a perfect solution but as Sean mentioned it is cheap and works generally well in light to moderate wind...Have a great day sailing.....

Table hole

I created a device out if square aluminum that is the same size at the table hole in the cockpit. I mounted a nice piece of wood to it on the top and cut a half moon on the top to hold the tiller handle. I also added a bungee cord. I put the device in the table hole and bungee the tiller to it. Works really well. Dave Simply Magic

Cajun Tiller Tamer

This may be the same as what Sean and Gary describe, but the description in the link is pretty good. It works very well on the 240 because of the smooth round tiller. I also have short loops of shock cord tied to each side which also comes in handy for keeping the rudder from flopping around while trailering.

PVC approach

hi folks, for trailering i use a line as a backup, but when the boat is left in the marina, i fashioned a holder out of PVC pipe the same O.D. as the tiller. at the top of the pipe is a T-connector that, with a little sanding to the I.D., slides right onto the end of the tiller. the bottom of the pipe fits inside the table hole and keeps the tiller centered. - ed
