Hi All,

I have just bought a Oceanis 41 and the importer told me that i need to paint the hull with an antifouling.
The boat is brand new, do you think it is neccesary? can I wait one season?
Dosent it come with a antifuolding treatment from the manufacture?

Regards

Sebastian

The need for anti-fouling is a function of where you sail and your local water conditions. In most saltwater location is it absolutely needed if the boat sits at a mooring. What coating is best is a question for locals. In fresh water it depends.. colder water locations (like Lake Superior) some boats do go without anti-fouling.

Also be careful what type of anti fouling to use. If the boat has a saildrive, there may be restrictions on what type of paint to use. Normally, paint is added when the boat is commissioned because the type and brand of paint customarily used varies by location, whether the boat is stored for seasons or left in the water year round, the typical frequency of repainting, if the custom is to use divers to clean the bottom and for other reasons. You definitely DO want to have bottom paint applied before launching. Trying to get any time without bottom paint may damage the bottom undercoating and will destroy your sailing enjoyment. Good luck!

Not necessarily true anymore. For the last decade or so, most higher-end boat builders have dropped polyester as a resin and switched to vinylester or even better, epoxy. These resins are basically water impermeable. This has eliminated the need for barrier coating. A new Oceanis for sure will be vinylester.

It will still get dirty as all heck, but damage, no.

the dealer usually puts the bottom paint on before going into the water and don't put your boat in with out bottom paint and it will be so much more work adding bottom paint after wards.
