Hey all -

I had a situation this weekend where a hose went on my anti-siphon valve located under the galley sink. I had to bypass the valve in order to get home. I will reconnect again this weekend with new hoses but I was curious to know if its dangerous to run the engine without the anti-siphon valve....even only for a short while. Will water back up into the engine even if you run it only once or do you need specific circumstances to occur where water will siphon back in from the muffler? I have a Catalina 30 with a YSM-12 Diesel. All seacocks are closed as of now.

Thanks - Rob

Rob, The purpose of the valve is to prevent an accidental flooding of the exhaust and then the engine after you shut down the engine. I believe it also helps prevent an air block in your raw water system when you start the engine. As long as you have good raw water flow with the engine running your good to go. Very important to close raw water intake immediatley after shutting down the engine. Replacr the valve asap.

Close the seacock

I had a problem years ago when I first got my C30 with the anti-siphonis located in the same place on my boat, under the sink. The little valve at the top of the anti-siphonis got clogged and it stopped working. As a result I flooded my engine with sea water. This happen a couple of times until I figured out the problem. Your engine will not flood while it's running but it can when you shut down. Make sure you close the seacock when the engine is off and that includes while your sailing. What I have done is to remove the little valve at the top of the anti-siphonis. I put a tee in the sink drain and ran a clear hose from the top of the anti-siphonis to the sink drain. This eliminates any chance of the valve clogging or sticking and since I used a clear hose I can check when the engine is running that the hole at the top of the anti-siphonis is clear and that sea water is flowing to my sink drain and out of the boat.
