I've got a Raymarine RL80CRC radar and the screen always has a lot of reflections from the sky behind me and of me too! Has anyone had any luck with anti-glare stick-on sheets? I remember that I tried one years ago on my RL70 display and it was so bad I took it off. But maybe there is an improved product available now and one of you sailors out there can tell me what has worked for you. The name of a brand of anti-glare and/or a source of supply would be most helpful.

The anti glare overlays don't help much. They are basically good for protecting the screen from scratches. What somebody needs to invent is a screen that can be read while using polarized sunglasses!

Doug, here is a solution to the polarized issue. I have done this with good success.

Buy a pair of cheap polarized sunglasses- Dollar store, under $5. You probably wouldn't want to implement this solution with a $200 pair. (Who, really buys $200 sunglasses anyway? One mis-step and Neptune has them....) :D

Anyway, using a sharp razor blade, cut the bottom half of the lens out of the frame. Now you have "bifocal" sunglasses. The top gives you polarized vision for distance and glare on the water, and the missing bottom gives a perfect view of your screens.

Cool! But your sailing buddies may think you look stupid. YMMV.

I'll still have to swap them for my reading glasses. :D

Get a pair of glasses that are corrected for distance on top and reading below. Perform the modification I suggest on a pair of clip-on sunglasses. :)

At the tender age (OK, ripe old) of 66, I got my first pair of glasses (reading) a couple of years ago.
Since I was 12, I have been on the water almost constantly and have always purchased high quality, reasonably expensive sunglasses. As prices soared on what I was using, I'd switch to another brand, but always quality glass lenses.
I have never had a cataract like so many of my boating peers, nor sunburned eyes.
With Vuarnet sunglasses passing $450.00 a pair (which I'm presently using and purchased for $160.00), I am now on the hunt for another brand. It's so difficult in these days of designer sunglasses to find a really good quality lens that actually protects one's eyes from the reflection off the water, as well as normal sunlight.
I agree, $450.00 a pair is an obscene amount of money to spend on glasses, but at around $150.00 for 5 or 6 years of quality, I'll spend the money. They always go in a hard case (one mounted by the companionway and the other on my belt when going ashore) so they don't get scratched lying around, and using the little rings that go between the frames and arms to keep them tight on my head, I don't lose them overboard any more.
The point is, how important is your eyesight to you? Do you want to bet your future eyesight on a pair of drugstore cheapos?

That's a interesting approach...
However my ophthalmologist advised me a long time ago to never buy cheap sunglasses. I have always worn prescription sunglasses, and fortunately have never lost a pair even when capsizing a boat during racing. Croakies work well. Now that I am a member of the bifocal and cataract generation, it's unlikely that I would be willing to make a change. I will still hold out hope that somebody will some day figure out a way to make a sunlight readable LCD screen that is Polarized lens friendly, although I am not holding my breath.

Sunglasses on Sale

I buy great sunglasses from Steep and Cheap, an online store that sells quality outdoor gear. They sell limited numbers one at a time, about 20 min apart. I recently bought Keanon glasses for $65. Ive bought Costa Del Mar for $50 too.

Good Luck. Bob
