Antal Winch Repair

My wife was tightening the main halyard using our Antal winch. I guess she didn't know her own strength and was cranking the winch to finish raising the main when we heard a snap from the winch. I've never dived into winch repair before so I called a couple of places for advice. They started talking about pawls and springs. I have no instructions for this winch so I don't even no where to begin. What do I look for? How intricate is it? I read on a previous post about putting a box around it before I start taking things apart which makes a lot of sense. After that I'm lost. Appreciate any advise on this. Joe, I found the web site prior to posting this . I wanted to find out what I needed to be aware of when I tore into this puppy. I've already contacted Euromarine( the distributor for Antal) and found them to be really helpful but I was hoping for some feed back from someone who has actually done it. I'll research the archives here and see if I can pull something up also. Paul H S/V Linda Belle 95 H26

Winch repair

I took apart, cleaned, greased and reassembled my Lewmar winches for the first time last month. I was a bit intimidated at first, but I did put a box around them so I wouldn't lose any parts. The Antal seems to have a few more parts than the Lewmar, but I actually found them to be reasonably simply to take apart and put back together. If there is something broken, I suspect it will be obvious as there aren't too many things in there that can break. Good luck.

We don't see too much Antal stuff out here, but I'm of the mind that modern winches are basically similar, so a general article such as you'd find in Sailnet.com might be all you need. Sorry I couldn't have been more helpful.
