Another spinnaker haylard question

I was just reading the thread below regarding the 356 Spinnaker Haylard length, and it spurred my own question. I don't have a spinnaker and am not comtemplating getting one, on my 2001 Hunter 290, any time soon, but my mast is set up for one and still has the messenger line running through it. My question is should I install a spinnaker haylard, before the messenger line breaks, just to have a spare haylard, or is it not worth the expense. s/s Wanderlust

You can alway replace the messanger!

Ken: If you do not want to go through the expense of installing the additional halyard, you can alway just replace the messanger. Personally I like the idea of having the additional halyard (just in case). I do not have an additional halyard for the main but would like one there too.

Good idea Steve

I was going to say yes, go ahead and put it in now...but considering all the trouble I had installing my halyard, this would be a LOT easier, and cheaper.Maybe even use a little better quality line.

I disagree

Go for the spin halyard now. It's easy to do, just ask anyone about securely tying the messenger to the halyard bitter end and pull carefully, especially as it reaches up atop the sheeve. You certainly don't want the thing to come apart at the top of the mast. Once you have the spin halyard you'll be tempted to go all the way. Running the spin is just great fun and provides a whole new tack.

I agree with Bill! flying the chute is a real kick!

Mine was really difficult

No matter how small of a knot I made, and using tape, it would get hung where it comes through at the top. I even got up there with the bosun's chair and couldn't get it through. Finally, splicing it worked-took all day.
