I think the idea of carrying weapons is stupid and dangerous. Not only will many of the countries visited arrest you for possession of a weapon but you are much more likely be killed by the pirates, unless you massively out gun them, in which case you are probably sailing in FPB. Avoid the area. If you are hell bent upon putting yourself and crew at risk, join a flotilla or convoy, or even better, get your self on one of those boat transport ships.

I'm with ifmdalvey on this one. Firearms in foreign countries are a bad idea for a hassle free cruise. The pirates have rocket propelled grenades (RPG) This is a rocket with about 600 meter range and a high energy shaped charge (HEAT) warhead. Those warheads can go through 15" of cold rolled steel. They can go through a sailboat end for end including the engine and keep on going!!! Add machine guns (plural) and you had better be "loaded for bear" and have a dedicated rabbits foot rubber.

I am not trying to be too flippant about a potentially dangerous situation for some innocent people, but a hijacking near Somalia?? Who could have seen that coming?

I just do not understand why people are taking their private vessels anywhere near that place or even some of the Indonesia areas either right now?

It's bad enough they are kidnapped, but they are Danish. Anybody ready for a cartoon reprisal scenario?

I really, really don't get why people go to these places 'for fun'. What could be appealing about putting your loved ones at risk. The Earth is 80 percent water...that leaves a lot of other places to sail!

Only if you are willing to brave the south of Africa. Pretty bad stuff down there, and cold too. The gulf of Adan is your only option.

If you are aiming to get round the world, then there is very little option, going round Cape of Good Hope, still takes you past here and if you want to enter the Med, you really have no option. They are not sailing here as a destination but its en-route to everywhere else. Have a look at your kids globe. Flotilla, convoy or ship transporter are the only semi safe options.

I agree. Keep you family away from the bad people. It's not like we have a shortage of oceans.
I hope this has a happy ending.

I'm as law abiding as anybody but I just can't understand why the navy ships of the US and NATO are not blowing these pirate boats out of the water on sight. Personally I wouldn't bother picking up the pieces either. Canukwi.

How do you know who is a pirate until the act is committed? or are you willing to kill every legit sailor, fisherman in the area? There is a law of the sea and most western countries try to follow by it, otherwise i guess we would all be sailing in the Great Lakes.

That's a lot of water to cover. How many ships would it take? How many ships can we spare?

I don't know what good a convoy really does. there's no armed escorts, So its just hoping they can only pick off a few from the school and you're not it.

best bet is blockaid the ports, and search ships leaving for weapons and ammo. and maybe some decoy boats.

how many ports does somalia have that a mothership can use?

10 armed men in a small boat 300 miles at sea, must be fishermen, right. To those quick to ask why the yachts are there, the answere is it is a free world and they have a right to be there. Remember these boats being taken are not within the 3 or 60 miles of somalia, They are hundreds of miles at sea.
There are cities in the U.S. where crime is high, when someone is murderd or robbed within those cities do you also say, sorry charlie, you knew the risk of living there.
Civilized society is fragil at its best and to allow the pirates to opperate at will puts us all in danger. We must ask if they get away with this "how long before gangs in our own country try the same thing? Look to Mexico and the drug wars, we are not that far from them.
All my best to this family and their friends
