Another Rave Review For Coppercoat

Funny, although for context the picture is of a different boat after the 2018 race. No details in the article on whether that one was Coppercoat too, and Bagshaw did say “it is not unique to my brand of antifouling”.

Interesting that the boats are limited to yachts and equipment equivalent to what was available in the ‘60’s, apparently not including bottom paint. For better or worse.

I'm wondering how that prop was able to generate enough thrust to get him into port. Towed, maybe?

As I have said many times, I wouldn't wish this stuff on an enemy
Buddy of mine went the same route with Coppercoat and saw the same thing after a few years. Said it was a barnacle attractant compared to other boats around him.

I noticed that too. And the picture is of a boat different than Bagshaw’s.
no antifouling is good preventing every type of growth. Some are better at preventing slime, some with barnacles, etc … And some just wear away after thousands of sea miles.

Point of clarification: The pictured boat may (or may not) be wearing Coppercoat but it is not Jeremy Bagshaw's current Golden Globe boat. That's my mistake and my apologies for any confusion. However it is a picture from the Yachting Monthly article and the article is specifically about how badly Bagshaw's Coppercoat bottom fouled while he was underway during the race.

And you can imagine how bad the fouling would be if the boat were sitting in a marina as opposed to moving 24/7.
This is one of those perception bias conclusions we believe to be true, however it isn’t always true.
Lots of marinas throughout the world are located in areas with little oxygen, lots of pollutants and consequently little marine life. As a result, some folks draw the conclusion their bottom paint is effective As nothing grows on the hull. I used to keep our boat in such a place.

Conversely, sailing in a nutrient rich environment, especially over a prolonged period, will result in growth regardless of bottom paint. Actually, it’s pretty common among cruising boats sailing around the Caribbean to hear that nothing works well. There are a couple of infamous marinas in both Puerto Rico and the DR where nothing grows on hulls regardless of what antifouling people use.

I think it still comes down to location, location, location.

As mentioned above (#14), the buddy had nothing but grief with Coppercoat while those around him had normal hull growth. I'm a couple of miles from the buddy and my last interval between coats was 7 years and this time I'm looking for 10 years. You have to be able to "read" ablative paint and not the label on the can. A few site members from the Pacific Northwest have also stated extended periods between coats.

This area is cold and we have very little polluting industry here. I occasionally see heavy barnacle growth, just not on the hull :

The above is the half haul out for 2022. Last bottom painted in 2019. Seven years to go for the next bottom painting.

Of course it's about location. In an area where fouling is minimal, you can get away with cheap, low-copper paint and twice annually cleanings. The rest of us need frequent cleanings and an anti fouling coating that actually retards aggressive fouling growth. That doesn't describe Coppercoat.

Rather than hearing what shouldn't be used - I'd really like to hear what should be used.

What's the positive feedback? What bottom paints are being used by the Golden Globe boats that aren't having a problem? Does anyone know?
