I have my new Garmin 3210C and the GMR18. I have decided on a stern mount for the radome but now here is my question. Should I do ple mount at the stern or backstay mount (I have a Hunter 40.5 with split backstay? The chandelry on this site has a gimbaled split backstay mount with no pole. If I do the backstay mount is it better with a pole or without? Gimbaled or not? Any help would be appreciated.

Personal preference

Hey Princess, You are going through the same mental gymnastics that I've been going through all spring. For me, it came down to finances and what I felt was going to be the easiest install. I think it comes down to your personal preference and what your plans are. I have a friend that works at Barker's Island Marina and they unstep masts all the time with domes on the mast and on the backstay and it's just one more thing to worry about and can be a drag to mess with the radome. So it depends on whether you unstep the mast frequently or not. A pole mount on the stern is accessible if you need to do any work, it also allows for future mounting of a lifting davit, solar panels, gps antennea, light, etc. Our plan is to sail the North Shore up into Canada and someday head out the Great Lakes, probably through the Trent-Severn waterway where we'll need to drop the mast and I'd like to keep from disturbing the electronis as much as possible. There really is no wrong way to do it, but I chose to build the tower with the option to level the dome out because as you know, Lake Superior (especially out in the open water) can be quite foggy, so I wanted to give myself every advantage I could against the ships and fishermen. Good luck with your descision. BTW, are you in the water yet?

Pole mount

Our radar scanner (radome) is mounted on an 8 foot tall 2 inch pole at the transom. We've been very happy with that setup. We've used in many times in the fog and/or at night. Although ours is fixed, and seems to work just fine that way, I may consider changing to a manually-adjustable leveling one at some future date. Garhauer makes a very nice one that many of our friends use and seem to like.

Pole mount

Radar on the old boat was on the mast. New one will be on a pole mount. I think the decision between pole and backstay mounts is largely a matter of boat design and personal preferance. I would though go for a gimballed mount. Gives you better coverage when heeled over.

Garhauer's manual leveling

system on a stern mounted pole is the way I went and deserves a good look before deciding on either a mast on backstay mount. I put their pole on my 36 Hunter Vision and am especially pleased with the accessibility it affords and it works great because you can easily adjust it to all angles of heel.
