Another Oxygen starved holding tank

I've been using KO in my tanks since I picked up the boat in July. Religiously rinse them with fresh water EVERY time they are emptied, and still I get STINK from the vent line every time the head is flushed. I can only guess there is insufficient oxygen for KO to work. According to your "Odor--Cause and Cure" I know that the run for my vent is WAY too long (about 11feet). Short of replumbing the entire vent system...What else can be done? Someone else mentioned Odorlos. What is that stuff? Thanks Mark Johnson Anthem

great stuff

Mark: We use Odorlos in our H410 holding tanks - after pump out and flush, throw in a packet and a gallon of water and you'll never have any head odor. We found it at BoatUS - sold in bottles of liquid and packets of dry aerobic bacteria material. We started using it when we had a 3/4 full tank and a broken macerator and non-functioning pump out station in our marina. Odorlos killed the smell in a half hour, and kept working until we were able to get to another marina to pump out a week later. /c s/v Twilight

An 11' vent line is waaaay too long!

K.O. will never work in your tank..'cuz it's not getting any air. The main ingredient in Odorlos is nitrogen, which produces oxygen, but it's dissipated fairly quickly...it's not continuous like live bacteria. So you'll have to add each time you begin to notice odor...and you'll have to religiously pump out and rinse after every weekend, adding Odorlos immediately. That "dose" will prevent whatever bacteria are still in the tank from generating odor between weekends, but you'll have to add again when you start using the head again. OTOH, you'll have to rework the venting once.

Odorloss will work

We use Odorloss in the P42 holding tank and have NO ODOR for 2 years. Our vent is will not allow enough O2 into to the tank for KO to work either. We tried it. We put about 4 oz of Odorloss in the tank when we leave the boat on Sundays. That's it. It never stinks.
