Our 1979 Hunter 30, Lutra, was sunk at Monroe Harbor in Chicago on October 19th during a bad storm that took many boats off their can. We are waiting for her to be taken off the bottom but most likely she will be scrapped.

Very sorry for your loss. We watched the havoc here on the nightly news. Also saw some of the video here on the net. Was your boat moored south of the breakwater entrance? I noticed on Google Earth that it seemed pretty exposed to any wind from 0 to past 90 degrees.

As one who has lost a boat I'm sorry to hear about your loss.. Did you have her long? Will you replace her with same or upgrade?

That is tragic. I hate hearing of the loss of any boat. They are more than like cars, which seem more ubiquitous. Every boat has a personality; the loss of one is akin to the loss of a pet, at least.

I do happen to know of a very nice H30 Mk 1, diesel, wheel steering, roller furling, in need of a new home. It can be got for a song. I would take it myself if I had a place to move it to. Anyone who's interested can get in contact with me.

We bought her in April and spent a lot of time and elbow grease getting her ready. She was my first boat. It is definately different than loosing a car. She was moored on the south end of the harbor. We are looking for another boat but need to get the salvage and insurance sorted first.

Thanks for all the kind words.

Very sorry to hear of your loss, especially when it's one of the small family of Cherubini H30s in Chicago. Hopefully you will be back on the lake with a "new" Cherubini next year. In the meantime, it would be an optimistic first step to put in your transfer request to any other harbor of choice in Chicago.

So sorry for your loss. The "windy city" gets its moniker for good reason and it can be tough on sailors and their craft. This has been a particularly bad year for Chicago sailors marked with a capsize of a ChiMac race boat and the loss of a crew member. Fortunately, no one in your family was hurt in this storm. It could have been much worse. The fiberglass can be replaced with something else that floats and can be enjoyed by all. I grew up on Lake Michigan in St. Joseph, MI and am very familiar with how ugly the lake can turn. It's more like an inland ocean than a lake. Best of luck on your search for a new water sled.
