question: have 12v dc waterpump for deck wash is it even thinkable to use this to empty water ballast tanks if we will be under way with motor"no sailing" should we end up no wind and going upstream is this idea even plausable or stupid? was thinking if were headed upriver for the day is it better for the motor to be pushing a boat without the water ballast weight and then fill when sails go up.on the return trip? 2nd with this type boat and a 9.9 tohatsu how fast normally can this boat move with just the motor ? thanks

I do not want to call it a stupid idea but I would not do it.

Logical question, but as you know, Hunter cautions against operating the boat with an empty tank. I wonder what your insurance company would think if you had an "unplanned event" ? Think of your boat as a plastic bathtub without the ballast - how stable is it really? Encounter a few waves and a couple of people on the rail and you'll probably take a bath.

Beyond the safety issues, I also see some practical problems. How long will it take to pump the tank dry and is your electrical system up to the task? Assuming you only have one battery, you may have to hand crank your motor to get home. Then you also have the problem of makiing sure your valve is water tight (which is doubtful).

This and other water ballast questions are answered at http://h260.com.

With a power boat, the bigger engine the faster you can go; this is not true with displacement hulls. Sailboat speed under power is limited by hull design. You can calculate your approximate hull speed by going to this link http://www.sailingusa.info/cal__hull_speed.htm. Make sure you use the waterline length, not the overall length of the boat. I'd guess a little over 6.0 kts.
