I ran the halyard cleat to the top of the mast. Does any body have an old sailors remedy to get it back down short of climbing the mast? Thanks, B.

pipe noose

Only time I did this it was on my friend's boat! Pulled the halyard out of his hand and up it went. We made a noose with 1/8" nylon line and taped it to the top of a piece of 1" pvc pipe. We used a piece of wire at the top of the pipe to hold the noose in the appropriate position. Tied the top portion of the pipe to a main sail slug and pushed this up the mast. This kept the top of the pipe in the right position to snag the halyard. Added sections of pipe until the noose was up to the halyard end. Pulled on the end of the noose line and snagged the halyard. Keeping tension on the line, lowered the pipe, disassembling pipe as we lowered it. Pvc pipe is light and cheap. I'm sure there is a better way, but this worked.

Float Poles

I used this on My old H260 with a forty foot mast. Go to local equipment rental shop and get concrete float poles. Some of the poles come it light weight. The poles screw together in sections. Cost about $30.00 to rent for 24 hours. I tape a large fishing treble hook to top pole and grap the line. May need and extra hand to help with the pole.

No big deal going up the stick!

Bill: It is really no big deal going up the stick. If you don't want to do it, one of the kids in the marina will love to do it for you. You just need a climbing harness or a climbing chair. It is not fun trying to haul a big fat guy like me, but the kids go up easy.

Top Of The Mast

Bill: Done that twice - both times at Block Island. Both times, securely lashed a large safety pin UPSIDE DOWN to a companion halyard (a safety pin can be forced - bent - back down if it grabs something you don't want). Raising the pin to the wayward cleat, succeeded in snagging it and carefully pulled it back down. Don't laugh - it worked for me. Bruce

Part of the Initiation

And those of us that haven't done this, please stand <grin> Congratulations Bill, you have now completed that step. The next step to consider is dropping the winch handle over board, or losing the bitter end of the anchor rode, though my favorite was losing the snubber line when I thought it was tied at the other end. Ah, such is life

Success!!

Thanks to all... We went out and got 40 ft. of 1 inch gray PVC conduit which was then harnessed with plastic telephone ties to the backstay.Of course we used some duct tape the ties were kept from falling down the stay, then using an old 4 inch paint roller(minus the roller) attached to the first PVC length I was able to hook the claet and bring it down. I appreciate everyone's help... Bill
