Sigh- it's been called a "tall ship" and a "pirate boat"

It's a gaff schooner!!!

Still nine rescued, cause the engine stopped????.

I thought we were going to need them after they circled around my boat yesterday in one of their Hueys. The prop wash almost knocked us down. I wish I had a video of it. Could not believe the force of their down draft

What disabled the boat? Was the rudder damaged? Could it not sail?

I think I heard on the news that their sails were also tangled around the mast. Something to that effect.

Re: More info from local newspaper

Read the story. For some sailors that have owned this vessel for eight years it just gave me the impression that this was their first time on a boat....

They were probably looking for someone and were trying to get close enough to read your name or numbers. They did that to me once, but I was motoring so it was no real problem. The CG pilots only get to train with their own boats, which the down draft won't hurt, so they may be unaware of the havoc it can cause on a sailboat. The HH60 can generate winds in excess of 100 knots. A polite phone call with some constructive criticism to the CG air station might be in order.

Glad everyone is alright. Sounds like the opposite of the Bounty story. Bounty they went to late, Ransom may of went to early.

The irony, pirate wannabees calling in the CG!

tsbb2: They are self-proclaimed pirate ship replica, sounds like a booze crooze crew.
Our cruises always include rum punch, beer, soft drinks and water, snacks, complimentary lunch, snorkelling equipment and also costumes and accessories for the guests who wish to dress up

OK, I wasn't there so I can only armchair it but....

It looks like a beautiful ship. Not something to be left adrift because a few things went wrong. How about PLANNING for possible adversity. We certainly do.

I would have spare sails on board and would know what to do if one or more of them failed. Ships of this size sailed for a thousand years without engines and a few blown out sails.

This ship was not sinking. A ship can still be maneuvered short sailed. They were not caught on a lee shore. A scared crew should be told to suck it up - its part of the deal.

I doubt I would have called the coast guard for rescue and left such a gorgeous vessel to her own devices.

Perhaps I'm all wet but these guys strike me as incompetent. I just don't know what they were thinking.

I don't think so. They are always doing rescue practice off Venice Beach. He was practicing with the Lifeguards. I think they buzzed me just for laughs, "Lets watch the old guy turn white when we knock him over."

So the Laws of Salvage apply here? Anyone want to go claim an old gaff-rigger with me. (Pirate costumes optional...)

Amazing that they were going to the Carribbean from Nova Scotia, yet they can't handle 30kts of wind??? Heave-to and crack open the rum is what I'd do.

They got a tow back into Maine. The skipper called for an evac after the bowsprit broke away and the forestay was lost. The boat subsequently lost a mast. Cut 'em a break, they're foolish pirates.

I wonder if they ever raised sails when they did charters. It almost sounds like they didn't know what to do when the engine quit. It sounds as if the crew also didn't have any idea what to do with sails. I'm not sure I would, either, on that kind of rig without somebody in charge giving direction. I'll cut them a break, but they didn't sound like the brightest bunch of pirates, either.

Well, like most pirates they were probably fogged by substance abuse problems, issues of self-discipline, lack of command clarity, and the product of an abusive home life. ;););)

A Ship of Fools.

Just my guess - sounds like the old dirty fuel tank getting a scrubbing first time in rough water and clogging the fuel filters problem.
